Is it safe for my dog to swim in natural water and go underwater?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 45 lbs

My dog loves to swim. Sometimes when I throw the ball in the water his whole head goes under. I usually take him to a park that has a waterfall. The water is about 3 feet deep and he does well. But is it safe for dogs to swim in natural waters? And is it safe for him to go under water to get his ball?

That is generally fine, especially considering the limited depth. Unfortunately I cannot rule out completely accidents, but these are quite rare with young and healthy dogs like Max.
