My dog ate a seashell. Should I be worried if she swallowed a piece?

There are spray-on products such as bitter apple which may deter pets from chewing on furniture, eating seashells in your backyard decor, etc. However in an outdoor setting, such sprays will likely get washed away each time it rains. If Sadie is very persistent about eating the seashells, removing them completely or relocating to a place out of her reach is the safest option. Ingested seashells, even if chewed up, could become a life -threatening gastrointestinal foreign body obstruction/result in a gastrointestinal obstruction that would require an expensive surgery to resolve (with no guarantee of complete recovery). If Sadie continues to vomit, bringing her into your vet for diagnostics and treatment is the safest option. Symptoms of a foreign body obstruction include vomiting shortly after eating, minimal defecation, abdominal pain, and lethargy.

You may see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or difficulty defecating. If the pieces are small enough, they could pass uneventfully in the next 24-36 hours. If your dog becomes symptomatic, an exam with your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER would be strongly recommended.

I would be surprised if you observe any severe ill effects from Pgmdad's seaweed ingestion. In the off chance she would become obstructed from the seaweed, you would likely note inappetance and vomiting within the next few days. Contact your vet if you note these changes. If she experiences any diarrhea, offer boiled white meat chicken and white rice in lieu of her regular dog food.

If you are concerned that the pieces are big and it just happened contact a vet to discuss inducing vomiting. They can decide if the pieces are too big to be thrown up. Otherwise watch for lethargy, belly pain, vomit and not wanting to eat as that can be symptoms of a blockage. I wish Mazzy the best!

If Jersey ingested any pellets, they should pass through her system uneventfully. If she ingested lead slugs, they may require removal before they cause lead toxicity. The nitrates in the gunpowder may cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, difficulty breathing or hematological changes (RBC damage). The shell case or wad should pass but may also cause GI upset. If Jersey chewed them within the past 1-2 hours, have her seen by your vet. Vomiting can be induced to get any material up and out. Further supportive care and monitoring may be necessary based on her clinical status.

If you see any of these symptoms in the next 24-48hrs, you should take Rayne to your local vets as an emergency. However, if she chewed the plastic into small pieces, most likely she will pass it with her stools and she will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

If she chewed them up into tiny pieces, she will likely pass them. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
