My neutered dog hates his cone. Are surgical suits good alternatives?

E-collars are not always necessary post-neuter, but if the vets put it on him, then they may have been particularly worried about him bothering the incision. You can always take the e-collar off and observe him for a while. If he's really attacking the incision, then the e-collar may be best, but you can also try your ideas of keeping it covered. You can also try to spray some anti-licking solution (can find this at the pet store) over the cover for the incision if he is still trying to lick that. Hi and thank you for your question! A cone would be best but a belly band could also work. Spray would not be recommended. That could irritate the incision. A baby onesie put on him will help. Not only is it cute, but it will keep him him licking his incision area. I hope this helps!

Hi, you could make a cone, but to be honest one bought from the store or vet is going to fit Luke much more comfortably. The best alternative to a cone I have seen was a very plush travel neck pillow that attached at the edges so it went all around the neck. This stopped the dog licking a spot on her mid back. Also as a temporary fix you could dress a small t shirt or even boxers over him to cover the lesion.

Try getting her one of the inflatable donut type collars to prevent her from getting to it. They are available at most large pet supply stores. I would contact your veterinarian today instead of waiting until Monday.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not think those pillow ones on the neck work very well. But the soft-sided cones you can certainly use. The hard plastic ones are not really recommended. Dogs don’t resist the soft ones as much as the hard ones. Just make sure that the cone is long enough to go past the end of her nose or she wilI still be able to lick at the incision. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
