My dog has a superficial bite wound. What first aid can I do?

My dog got bit by another dog it looks pretty superficial what can I do to first aid it myself

I would put an ecollar on Maxine and bring her to the veterinarian. Bite wounds can appear superficial but many times they can be a lot worse. She most likely will need antibiotics to help. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Unfortunately there is no way to link this question with your previous one. So I don’t have all the history or the question you asked. However, those appear to be bite wounds on Lady, and pretty significant ones. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. She is likely painful and would benefit from pain management as well as she needs to have the wounds cleaned and started on antibiotics. The one on the hind leg may need to be sutured. However, it would still be a good idea to have him evaluated by a veterinarian to look at it more closely in case it is deeper than what it looks like. Quite frankly, take him to the vet. They can properly assess the damage done, treat the wound and prescribe antibiotics to treat infection. A wound may not look deep from the surface, but it can be hard to tell how much damage is beneath the surface.

These all look like superficial grazes in the pictures provided and I would keep them clean with saline or dilute iodine disinfectant. Monitor closely for any heat, pain or swelling around any of the wounds which would indicate infection requiring antibiotics from your vet. I recommend you keep them separated to prevent further injury in the future

My dog has a wound that looks like a bite. Can I treat it at home?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor girl! This actually look more like a scab from some mild trauma. While I do not see evidence of a bite in that picture, that is still possible and an examination would be needed to determine that for sure. Because it is small and mild, I think it would be ok to treat at home. You may apply a thin film of triple antibiotic ointment on the affected area twice daily for 5 days. If this does not improve or resolves, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. There is a very good chance that this will improve quickly. However, if you notice any signs of worsening, like severe swelling, have her evaluated. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog was bitten by a stray. What first aid should I do now?

Ouch! Poor Bones! I would try to clean it with a mild soap and water. I would put a cone collar on him to prevent him from licking it and put some Neosporin in the wound twice a day. Your vet will be able to shave the hair and close the wound with sutures or skin staples if needed. They will also be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics and pain meds. I do not recommend giving him any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

Dog has a bleeding head wound from play. Should I see a vet?

Hi and thanks for posting! Sometimes bite wounds can leave pockets in the skin making the wound worse than they appear initially. It would be a good idea for this to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will asses the area for pockets in the skin and asses whether or not stitches are needed. It seems small enough for tissue glue to be used but the wound may need to be closed with a stitch or two. A lot of bacteria is intro introduced into the skin and surrounding tissue during a bite. My dog has a jowl cut. What can I do for home care before the vet?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Superficial wounds around the face are usually treated with topical antibiotics (creams or ointments) or antibiotics tablets. Larger wounds need to be stitched up, but if the would you found is not fresh, most likely your vet would not want to stitch it up. Please, clean the would twice a day with 4% chlorhexidine solution (you can buy it at pharmacies) for a few days and it will hopefully heal up. However, if it starts to bother Aimee or becomes painful you will have to take her to your nearest vets possibly to get a course of antibiotics.
