My dog is suddenly lethargic and can't walk. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old

My dog has been fine all day. High energy and happy. My husband went to play fetch with her and she suddenly didnt want to. Now she is having trouble getting up and walking. She isnt whinning, but you can tell she is having difficulty. She is currently sleeping and seems to want to stay on her bed. Nothing abnormal happened today. She did chew up one of pur kids plastic blocks.

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned that Lexi either injured herself while playing ball outside or has some G.I. upset from ingesting a plastic block. I would keep an eye on her tonight and see if she’s interested in eating her dinner. If she still lethargic and not acting like herself in the morning you may want to consider taking her to the vet to be examined.

If she has an intestinal blockage she will need to be monitored closely with X-rays to determine if surgery is required to have it removed. If she has injured her self she may need some anti-inflammatory medication to help get her feeling better again.

She could be suffering from back/spinal pain or abdominal pain from something like pancreatitis. A physical examination by your veterinarian will help determine the cause of her discomfort. My dog won't eat and is lethargic after being outside. What's wrong?

I would be concerned that Bell hasn't returned to normal after 12-24 hours. While heat injury is possible usually dogs have issues sooner than now such as seizures, diarrhea, bruising and/or collapse. She could have a problem with her GI tract, something stuck in her esophagus or even a respiratory issues causing her changes. If she continues to cough, seems lethargic/lack of energy, or has any vomiting, diarrhea or continues to have a decreased appetite today she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. I would try calling your veterinarian today as they sometimes have an oncall service or an emergency veterinarian on call to answer questions as well.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zellie. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian to investigate this sudden change in behavior. She sounds very sore. She could be experiencing pain in her back or hindlimbs that is limiting her mobility. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her and try to detect any sore areas. If found, x-rays may be recommended. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
