Why did my dog get sudden hives after being outside in the yard?

Allergies are definitely a possible cause these hives. Allergies are most commonly due to environmental causes (i.e. pollen) and can start suddenly. Benadryl is usually helpful in these cases, so it may be mange. Mange is caused by a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin. This tends to be very itchy. They usually get this from other animals. It's best to have a vet check the skin. They can check for mange and give better treatment for allergies. For now it's best to give him a bath with cool water using a dog shampoo with oatmeal or aloe as an ingredient. I hope that helps and Dozer gets better soon.

If this does not resolve shortly, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian for treatment of an allergic reaction. This is usually treated with an anti-histamine medication and steroids. They may resolve on their own in a few hours. If Blue is itchy, contact your veterinarian and discuss antihistamine use. If they worsen or spread or if he develops difficulty breathing, take him to the nearest veterinary ER. They look like hives. She likely was bite by a bug and is experiencing an allergic reaction. I recommend you have her seen by your veterinarian to examine the areas and determine if medications are needed if the hives last longer than 2 hours or if you notice vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, or worsening hives.

Poor guy. He is likely having an allergic reaction to something he was exposed to outside. You can give him an antihistamine to see if this improves things. As long as his breathing is ok and there is no swelling around the neck, he is likely to be fine after 12 hrs or so as the reaction subsides. You can also try bathing him in an oatmeal or hypoallergenic shampoo to help calm down the skin. If the skin reaction does not improve or worsens by tomorrow then have your vet take a look at him and they can administer stronger medications to subside the skin reaction. It will take a bit of investigating on your part to figure out what he could have been exposed to to cause him to break out into hives.

Poor Osborne! Unless you have already done so, I recommend to take him into the vet to likely get some steroids. Sometimes the immune system needs a combination of antihistamines and steroids for 1-2 weeks to calm down and stop reacting. It’s unusual to see this type of reaction for so long. The doctor may also talk with you about checking a CBC to look for an abnormality in the cells and to check any skin masses he may have for a specific malignant tumor called a Mast Cell Tumor.
