Why did my dog suddenly flail, then have an uneven gait and head tilt?

That is very unusual. There are several things that come to mind that could cause the signs. Ingesting toxins, an inner ear infection, stroke or viral infections are all possible. Anytime a pet appears off-balance you should be concerned and I recommend to take Nigel in to see a veterinarian right away. The doctor will need to perform a few basic tests to try to figure out the cause of the imbalance. Treatment will depend on the cause. Best of luck and I hope this is helpful. This could be anything from symptoms of poisoning to an ear infection or vestibular disease to a tumor or neurological condition. I recommend getting her seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam, bloodwork, possibly x-rays, so your vet can determine the cause of Portia's balance problems and be better able to advise you on treatments.

I'm sorry that happened to your dog! It's always scary to see them disoriented. Based on what you've reported, I suspect she may have experienced a seizure. It sounds like she recovered without complication as they often do. My personal dog has epilepsy so I've seen this many times. I would record the symptoms and date on your calendar. I would consult with your veterinarian and report her symptoms (not an emergency unless she experiences another episode today). Your vet can perform a thorough exam and recommend any other diagnostics to make sure there is nothing obvious that needs treatment. Depending on what they find and if she has more episodes, appropriate treatment can be recommended.

What you are describing with Shasta may be something called vestibular disease. The most common condition that causes trouble walking, falling over, head tilt and trembling is Vestibular disease. This is a problem with the balance center in either the brain or the inner ear. Possible causes are an ear infection, stroke, low thyroid, a brain tumor or if he is just old it can be idiopathic (meaning we don't know why). I have seen dogs become Vestibular and then be normal that quickly, though usually the signs can persist for up to 2 weeks. I am not sure about the relation to the food you are feeding. If he shows the symptoms again I would immediately take him to your Vet for an exam. Consider video taping it so you can show them in case it goes away quickly again. Hello, It sounds like Taisie is experiencing some neurologic abnormalities. It is hard to say without physically examining her what the problem is, but some possibilities are spinal pain, a herniated disc, vestibular (inner ear) infection or disease, or a brain tumor. Any of these issues could cause drastic changes in balance and falling, but the treatment for each one would be very different. I would recommend taking Taisie into her veterinarian to be examined. There is something called Old Dog Vestibular Disease, that causes dogs to suddenly appear to be totally unable to balance, be nauseous, spine in circles, or even be unable to stand. This happens for no particular reason, and usually improves over a few weeks with patience and supportive care (anti-nausea medication and fluid/nutritional support as needed). It is important to check for middle ear infections (which requires the otoscope at the vet clinic), general blood work and thyroid levels, and do an exam to make sure she doesn't have signs of other neurologic issues that would suggest a brain tumor. So, I'd advise keeping her safe tonight by blocking stairs, removing water boils, etc and taking her to the vet tomorrow to be checked out.
