Why does my dog keep trying to suckle my other dog's nipples?

This is usually not a hunger-driven activity in a 10 week old kitten. It can indicate that the kitten was weaned or taken away from its mother too early. I would definitely continue to prevent this behavior, as it can continue into adulthood and could cause problems like an infection in the mammary gland of your dog. You may have your dog wear a shirt to cover the nipples, or keep them separated unless you can monitor them. Since it can be brought on by stress, you can try supplements for stress such as Zylkene or Feliway/Comfort Zone Feline Pheromones. Missy engaging in nipple sucking could be a behavioral change, but it could also be due to underlying discomfort associated with that nipple/mammary gland. Scheduling a visit with Missy's veterinarian would be beneficial to get a good palpation of the mammary glands associated with the nipples she is sucking to make sure there are no masses palpable. If she receives a clean bill of health, then it could be a behavioral change she is exhibiting.

You may have to put little clothes on them so they cannot suck each other. If mama does not have mastitis anymore, you could try giving them back to her so they can suckle her. She may even start to lactate again. (And make sure you monitor her well so she does not get mastitis again) Unfortunately puppies need the suckling for comfort so they will look for something warm to suckle whenever they can.

You can try distracting him or diverting his attention when he does it but this is just a relic of puppyhood that is left over. Most dogs will eventually stop this. It tends to not be pathologic unless he sucks on the same site repeatedly and causes a rash.I hope this at least points you in the right direction. Please post again with any further questions.

You will need to separate Misty from the others or there could be serious damage to the other puppies' genitalia. This is probably from being separated from mom at a young age. You could try giving Misty a stuffed animal or a blanket to redirect her - she may suckle on these things instead.

I am not sure why your pet would be self-mutilating herself. Typically self mutilation cases occur with a recently docked tail, or cropped ear, or some body part that was recently operated on. Or they occur when a particular body part is painful to the pet. Unless there is some condition occurring under the skin that is irritating to your pet that has gone undetected, I see no reason for her to do this. Maybe this should be looked at by your vet to see if they can detect any abnormalities with the skin in this area. You can try placing a cone on her or a t-shirt to prevent her from mutilating herself until you can get her seen by your vet. If she is causing serious trauma to the nipple, then you may want to discuss surgical removal of the nipple entirely and/or oral medication for anxiety to see if you can curb this behavior. I will say this is quite a peculiar thing and is not seen commonly in pets. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of it before she does more damage to herself.

This is typically associated with the nursing behavior seen in puppies. Adults dogs who do this behavior do it for comfort, as it mimics how puppies nurse from their mother. You can take away her access to blankets to stop her from doing this. If it isn't possible to take away her access, I would distract her immediately when she tries to do this behavior. Try to engage her play or give her a toy filled with a treat to move her attention away from the blanket. Encourage any behavior that is positive and doesn't involve sucking on blankets with praise, attention, and treats.
