Why does my dog pee when I greet her after crating? Is it submissive?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 15 lbs

When i let my dog out of its crate and bend down to pet her, she urinates slightly. If i wait about 5 minutes and then bend to greet her she still urinates. it seems like a submissive thing. Help!

Submissive/excitement urination is very common and does sound like this is what is happening. I would just let Stella have some time out of her crate without any acknowledgement/interaction for a while until she settles down, and then be sure to pet her on an easy to clean surface. Sitting down first to get to her level instead of bending over her to pet her may also help her feel more comfortable and reduce urination accidents.
