Why is my Chihuahua straining with watery blood, no blood in stool?

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that Peanut isn't feeling well. It sounds like he has soft stool or diarrhea, which makes dogs strain to defecate as the irritation and inflammation of the rectal area makes them feel like they have to go. This can also cause the rupture of tiny blood vessels in the rectal area, which may cause the red liquid you are seeing. I don't recommend giving him anything over the counter, but if he is acting okay otherwise and not vomiting, you might consider withholding food for the evening and then try feeding him boiled chicken with rice to see if his stool will firm up. If he still has the soft stool and straining tomorrow, I highly recommend bringing him to the vet. At the vet's office, they will examine him, take his temperature, and likely check his stool for parasites, which can cause soft stool. They may also recommend an abdominal x-ray. Based on what you seeing, having a fecal sample brought in to your veterinarian for analysis would be a great plan. He or she will be able to tell you if there are any intestinal parasites present. This is one of the most common reasons for blood in the stool, and weight loss despite a normal appetite. If you can not get to the veterinarian, treatment with a dewormer and/or drug to kill coccidia might be warranted. These can be obtained at most pet stores or tractor supply.

The constipation may be the result of an anal sac infection or rectal tumor. It sounds like Roscoe is in pain also. Please take him in for an exam and an enema to relieve the constipation and they can also check his anal glands and do a rectal palpation to check for a mass. Roscoe may need pain medication and antibiotics if they find an infection. They can then discuss his diet and whether he needs additional fiber added to his diet. I like to add a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding for added fiber. This does sound like a painful and possibly serious problem so please take Roscoe in soon. Oh no, poor Pixee! It's very concerning that she is passing feces that have blood in it. If she is pooping a lot, she could have diarrhea. She really needs to see a vet as soon as possible because blood in the feces can have some very serious causes including eating something toxic, a foreign body, trauma to the GI tract, or GI tumors. I would take Pixee into a vet immediately to diagnose the cause of her bloody feces and the vet can discuss treatment options.

Hello. At this age I would be concerned about cancer, but it may also be an infection in one of her anal glands, a parasitic infection, or colitis. It's not normal to have blood in the stool, and if Lola didn't go at all yesterday and her stool is currently hard, it could be that she has constipation. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.
