Why is my 8-month Yorkie puppy straining to pee with no urine?

Hi and thanks for posting! There are really no home treatments for a urinary tract infection. Your best bet is taking her to be seen by her veterinarian so a diagnosis can be reached in order to appropriately treat her. Your veterinarian will likely take a sterile sample of urine from Athena to be analyzed in order to determine if Athena has a urinary tract infection or perhaps another health issue such as estrogen responsive urinary incontinence which can be common after spaying. Both conditions have different treatments so it is important Athena have these checked with her vet. Urinary tract infections are more common in female dogs and sometimes can be more common in females that have a hooded vulva which is a anatomically variation. Some owners may opt to place their pets on a special urinary food while others may turn to a daily cranberry supplement to help prevent them in the future. I hope this helps!

I'm guessing that you're feeling Bud's bulbourethral gland which is a normal part of the anatomy and sometimes appears as a bulge on both sides of the prepuce. I'm concerned that Bud is straining to urinate - this is concerning in a puppy his age. A urinary tract infection is possible but shouldn't cause an obstruction. A urinary tract infection can cause pain when urinating and increased frequency and urgency when going which can look similar to an obstruction. If he is obstructed this would be an emergency, so I would recommend taking him to an emergency veterinarian today.

The most common reasons for straining to urine, urinary accidents and bloody urine are: urinary tract infections (UTI), crystals in the urine, bladder stones and if she is an older dog a bladder or urethral tumor. I recommend collecting a urine sample and bringing her to the Vet before the weekend as she is very uncomfortable. The urine sample can determine if she has an infection or crystals and an X-ray is needed to check for bladder stones. I wish Chi Chi a speedy recovery!

I would try to collect a urine sample and bring it with you for an appointment with your Vet. If she has an infection they can provide her with antibiotics. When dogs are in heat they sometimes act lethargic. She is a bit young to have an infected uterus as they do drink and urinate more. It is best to have her examined. I wish you the best!

Straining to urinate could be a medical emergency, and I would recommend having Blacky examined by a vet ASAP to determine if she has a urinary blockage. The vet may need to do an x-ray or ultrasound to look closely at the bladder.

Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. Another clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Ultrasound or x rays of the abdomen may be needed as there may be stones inside the bladder (which does not show up on urine analysis). I am concerned about a urinary obstruction by a urinary stone or a urinary tract infection with resultant inflammation/straining/and urge incontinence. If he cannot pass a good stream of urine when urinating you need to have him evaluated immediately to determine what the problem is. If his bladder pressure increases, the bladder to can stretch out and will lose some of it's muscle contraction. The pressure can also back up into the kidneys causing kidney damage and failure. Again if he can't urinate a good stream, is straining a lot, you need to get him evaluated right now to prevent further problems. None of the meds he is on should be causing this. He is neutered so an enlarged prostate isn't possible. Good luck with Zeus. I hope he feels better soon.
