My Chihuahua had one pup, still has stomach lumps. Are more coming?

My Chihuahua gave birth to a pup this morning at 4AM. She still has a couple lumps on her stomach area. Is it still possible for her to give birth to more pups?

These lumps could be her mammary glands, but it could be possible that Cloe has more puppies in her uterus. More than four hours should not pass between puppies being born, so if you are thinking there are more puppies, she will need to see a vet immediate. Chihuahuas often have trouble giving birth due to their small size, and veterinary attention is always needed in those cases. I would have Cloe seen by a vet now.

Congratulations on your new puppy! To answer your question, yes, it is still possible for Cloe to pass more puppies. However, based on your statements I am pretty concerned at this point. Typically, once the first puppy is out of the birth canal, we see more puppies every 1-4 hours being delivered. While there are certainly situations where there are greater delays, the amount of time that has passed has been quite substantial already. If you are seeing visible asymmetric lumps on Cloe's abdomen that are not moving, I would get her to a veterinarian as soon as possible. The vet will be able to perform an ultrasound to determine if the fetuses are still viable. The vet will also be able to determine if a C-section may be necessary to extract the remaining puppies. Chihuahuas are quite commonly known for being a breed that often requires C-sections to complete birth due to the large size of the fetuses head compared to the diameter of the birth canal.

I always recommend surgical removal because they continue to grow, even if they are not cancerous. Another possibility would be a hernia. If this is a hernia, surgery would be recommended to repair it because organs such as intestines, bladder or uterus can become entrapped. I would recommend an evaluation by a veterinarian to determine what it is and make recommendations on how to treat it.

I would definitely recommend taking Delilah to an emergency veterinarian for an examination. It sounds like she could still be in labor, and if she's been pushing for more than 30 minutes with no puppy it is considered an emergency. The veterinarian might start by taking an x-ray or performing an ultrasound to see if there are puppies left behind.

Contractions can continue for several hours after delivery, that is for the purpose of getting all the placenta out of the uterus. It's not possible for you to know if there are more puppies in her uterus just by feeling her belly, but if you are unsure and worried, the only thing that can give you a definitive answer would be an xray or an ultrasound.

If you suspect there are more puppies that have not been born yet it is best to seek emergency care ASAP, especially if she has gone several hours without producing another puppy. Your vet may be able to examine or X-ray her to see if any more puppies are in the birth canal. Most small breed dogs typically only have 1-2 puppies in a litter normally, but there can be exceptions and if she seems in distress or you suspect a stuck puppy, seeking care ASAP is needed.

The only way to know with certainty how many puppies might be in a litter would be with imaging modalities such as x-ray and ultrasound. Dependent upon how far along Twix is, the veterinarian would suggest which of these diagnostic tools would be most useful. Hope this make sense.
