Dog has spreading skin blisters not responding to allergy meds?

This does look like a severe skin disease. Dogs can develop environmental allergies similar to eczema, but I would expect that he would have responded some to the medications prescribed at least temporarily if this was the case. Buddy could have a parasite, resistant infection, or an autoimmune disease causing these symptoms as well. You may want to recheck with the vet to see if there are any other tests they might recommend - a skin scrape, fungal culture, skin cytology and culture, or biopsy might be the next steps. If Buddy is not on a good flea and tick preventative I'd recommend starting one as well just in case of parasites.

Hi. If she isnt getting better on the treatment, I would recommend getting her back in to see your veterinarian. It could be that it isnt a skin infection. It could be an autoimmune condition or even a type of skin cancer. I would recommend a biopsy as well as the recheck

Hello and thank you for your post! From the pictures that you have attached, it could be due to a hypersensitivity to food. However, most cases that I see that are secondary to a food allergy do not look like this. The spot that you have taken a picture of looks like it could be caused by several possibilities. The first being a bacterial or fungal skin infection. Skin mites are another possibility that could be causing what you are seeing. Another possibility would be an irritant such as a chemical causing the hair loss and blistering that you are seeing. Bandit may need to go on a course of oral antibiotics or an antifungal along with topical therapy with medicated shampoo. A couple other tests that could be run could be what is called a DTM culture to check for ringworm and a culture and sensitivity of the skin to check for bacterial organisms. If you are unable to get to your vet again right away, I would suggest starting with a medicated shampoo such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until resolved. However, I would suggest taking him back into your vet to have additional testing done and other treatment options. If this continues to worsen and your regular veterinarian is unable to get this problem resolved, I would suggest scheduling an appointment with a Veterinary dermatologist. I hope this helps! Poor guy. I see a lot of hair loss and folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles) there. This appears to be a bit more than a simple allergy condition. I suspect your pet may have skin mites. I highly recommend returning to your vet and getting a skin scrape done to check for mites. If Oscar does indeed have mites, then there is a completely different kind of treatment for that. Also due to the secondary infection, Oscar will need to go on a short course of oral antibiotics prescribed by your vet as well. I hope that things clear up soon with your pet Oscar! There are a lot of things that could be causing this appearance to the skin, and it may not be easy or cheap to figure it out. I would recommend that you keep working with the vet. Baseline blood work, thyroid hormone, testing for Cushing's disease, skin biopsies, food trials, flea preventatives, etc may be needed.

It's unfortunately difficult to always tell by a picture what is going on. It looks like a possible contact allergy. I would try an anti histamine with a topical cream/shampoo for inflamed skin. I would monitor her outside and make sure she is not sticking her nose any where she shouldn't like an ant hill. If not improving or getting worse I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed usually with antibiotics. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
