Why is my dog losing hair with blisters despite diet change?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 100 lbs

Bandit has been losing hair in one spot now for a month or two and it has been growing larger. There is a few blisters. The vet I take him to said it's just a skin irritation from food and we have taken him off certain foods to change his diet because he is allergic to red meats but even so he is still losing hair in that one spot.

Hello and thank you for your post! From the pictures that you have attached, it could be due to a hypersensitivity to food. However, most cases that I see that are secondary to a food allergy do not look like this. The spot that you have taken a picture of looks like it could be caused by several possibilities. The first being a bacterial or fungal skin infection. Skin mites are another possibility that could be causing what you are seeing. Another possibility would be an irritant such as a chemical causing the hair loss and blistering that you are seeing. Bandit may need to go on a course of oral antibiotics or an antifungal along with topical therapy with medicated shampoo. A couple other tests that could be run could be what is called a DTM culture to check for ringworm and a culture and sensitivity of the skin to check for bacterial organisms. If you are unable to get to your vet again right away, I would suggest starting with a medicated shampoo such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until resolved. However, I would suggest taking him back into your vet to have additional testing done and other treatment options. If this continues to worsen and your regular veterinarian is unable to get this problem resolved, I would suggest scheduling an appointment with a Veterinary dermatologist. I hope this helps!     He may need further testing such as a culture or a biopsy to see what the cause is for that single spot. You can always alternate cortisone cream with anti fungal cream to help with the redness and blisters. It my be a skin infection or an environmental allergy

What causes dog skin irritation, redness, blisters, and hair loss?
Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

My dog has blisters and hair loss on her head and ears. Is it serious?
Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the picture and description, I would suggest having this examined by Mario's veterinarian for further testing and treatment. I would suggest performing a culture on the skin as it does look infected. I would also recommend a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this. It looks as though you are using a plastic cone, which is great! Dogs love scratching at irritated areas. if you are unable to get to the vet right away, I would suggest using a veterinary wound cream such as Zymox topical ointment. I would continue using the cone and ointment until this is completely resolved. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. There are some things that you can do at home if you are unable to get to a vet right away. I would suggest starting with a shampoo that is medicated such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I would also suggest starting welactin omega-3 fish oil and essential 6 Spot On by dermoscent. If there is no improvement then I would see your vet for further testing and treatments. Dog has spreading skin blisters not responding to allergy meds?
In your picture this looks kind of like cutaneous mucinosis which is seen in Shar Peis but can also be seen with some other diseases as well. If it is not improving with the prescribed medications you may want to recheck with your vet or ask about referral to a dermatologist or other specialist.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From your picture, it looks as though Bazil may have a skin infection. I would start Bazil on a topical therapy with a shampoo such as Duoxo PS Chlorhexidine Combination and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend using Welactin omega 3 fish oil and Essential 6 Spot on by Dermoscent. I would do this for 2-3 weeks. If at any time the rash worsens or does not resolve, I would get Bazil seen by his veterinarian for further diagnostics and treatment. I hope this helps!
