My dog's nail is splitting and she's crying. Does she need a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

Hi, well noticed my dog was hurt from her nail. I thought she had a splinter by her nail but it looks like it's splitting in half, not sure though. She cries when she touches her nail. Can you see the pics and if you can see what it is; and if there's anything I can do or if I have to take her to the vet? I'll appreciate any information..thank you!

Ouch, poor girl! This nail will need to be removed. Yes, you do have to take her into the vet. I'd take her first thing in the morning to get this treated. Do not feed her in the morning in case she needs to be sedated. I'd put an Ecollar on her tonight to keep her from licking at it. I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Ouch, poor Zoey! I would not try to remove it yourself, as it is likely painful to her and she may bite you due to the pain. I would try to cover it tonight, and put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at it. Take her into the vet in the morning to have the nail removed. I wouldn't feed her tonight or in the morning in case she needs to be sedated.

Do not let Scout keep cleaning it, this will lead to infection in the area and will make things worse. Put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking it. You can make one at home, and I will put a link below on how to do this. Bandage it, but not too tight. Change the bandage daily, and make sure it stays dry and clean. If you see signs of infection (red, swollen, warm to the touch, pus), it's infected and he will need to see a vet. Best of luck and happy holidays.

Poor Amber! That nail needs to be cut, but I'd have a vet do it since it's painful for her. Take her into the vet first thing in the morning to have it done. Tonight, bandage her paw (not too tight!) to keep her from licking at it. Best of luck.

My dog's nail is broken and detached. What should I do now?

Poor Ruby. These can be really painful to dogs. This will have to be cut off, but I would not do it yourself because of the pain. Wrap a bandage around her paw to protect and cover it, then have her seen by a vet in the morning to have it treated. Cover the whole paw with the bandage. She may need to be sedated to have it removed, so don't feed her in the morning. I hope this helps!

Poor baby. I would definitely go to the vet for that one. The groomer could pull it off, but there could be a lot of pain and bleeding. At the vet they can sedate him if needed, as well as send him home with a few days of pain medications or even antibiotics if he's been licking at it a lot.

That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! My dog has a split nail. Should I go to the vet, groomer, or fix it?

Since it is not actively bleeding you can trim the nail yourself. It doesn't look that bad but you need to cut off the top part that is "hanging" or it will catch on things and could potentially cause more damage and pain to her. When you trim it, it may bleed so if you are not prepared for that at home then you should have your vet do it. A groomer may not be comfortable doing this but you can ask them.
