Will spaying change my dog's playful personality or energy levels?

Spaying dogs is the best option to help prevent certain conditions such as pyometra and reduce the possibility of mammary tumors. Usually dogs recover very quickly after surgery and she is expected to be fine after surgery. It may take her a few days to be back to normal but that would be the expectation. Unfortunately, spaying (or neutering) does not have significant impacts on any aggressive or temperamental behaviors. It tends to reduce sexual behaviors (and eliminate the risk of pregnancy and infections of the uterus), but there is no guarantee that spaying her will change her behavior. I would consult with a Veterinary Behaviorist who can make recommendations for Kali's specific behavioral issues, as not all are treated equally. I hope this is helpful!

Some dogs do get lethargic after surgery but some do not and in fact have to take sedatives to keep them still. Monitor Bella closely for vomiting, diarrhea or acting like she doesn’t feel good. Yes absolutely she will!! Post operative care usually involve rest for 36 hours after surgery, to wear a buster collar and to do lead walks and restrict exercise for 10 days. Other than that she will be ok no worries, in a month time she will be like nothing was happened.

Oh dear, poor Miki! Immediately after this type of surgery, Miki may be a bit quieter for the next few days as he recovers. After this time, most dogs return to their normal selves without any change in personality or temperament - usually within 10-14 days. He will likely require a hospital stay after surgery to assure that he seems to be healing well and is not experiencing severe pain. For the 10-14 days following surgery, try to keep him quiet and prevent any running, jumping, or playing, as this could delay healing and lead to bigger problems. He will also need to wear some form of an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from licking at the incision and pulling out any sutures or staples. On a personal note, one of my dogs also had surgery to remove foreign material and bounced back to his normal self after the post-operative recovery period. She is still recovering from her spay only 2 days out from surgery. She really shouldn't be doing strenuous play activity until after she has completely healed from her surgery, which is around 10 days post surgery. So take it easy and allow her to heal for now, she will be back to her normal self in no time.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Popo. Neutering him will help to prevent against certain types of prostate diseases and even some forms of cancer. It will decrease his desire to roam looking for female dogs. It does not affect personality. Every surgery carries the risk of anesthesia. He could experience post-operative swelling or infection. Some adult dogs can gain weight after the surgery. So his calories need to be monitored. These risks are minimal in most cases though. I hope this information helps!
