My dog just got spayed. Is pain medication normal for recovery?

Good question. Typically pets are pain free after day 3 or 4, which is why we don’t give medication past that. Signs of pain are constant fidgeting when trying lay down, abnormal panting, decreased appetite and unwillingness to move around and whining. It could very well be a combination of both. However most dogs get over the e-collar after the first 1-2 days. If you are concerned about her pain level then I would ask her vet if they can prescribe additional pain medication for her. Also depending on what pain medicaitons she is on it may be making her drowsy. Take care and I hope Pepper is able to make a fully recovery from her surgery soon.

Spaying dogs is the best option to help prevent certain conditions such as pyometra and reduce the possibility of mammary tumors. Usually dogs recover very quickly after surgery and she is expected to be fine after surgery. It may take her a few days to be back to normal but that would be the expectation. I recommend a phone call to your veterinarian to ask about additional pain medications. Some dogs are more sensitive than others. My own puppy needed a second prescription medication to make him more comfortable. Although most dogs do fine with just carprofen, it might not be enough for Bella. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, or concerning, but we don't want her to be painful.

Occasionally after spaying, dogs will have no appetite for the first 12-24 hours. In the meantime, take a look at her incision site. If it is red, swollen and hot to the touch, she needs to see your veterinarian right away as these symptoms may indicate infection. You can also try offering her a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice or some treats to stimulate her appetite.

What you are describing is pretty normal side effects from the anesthesia. Dogs definitely feel pain after surgery! You should only give pain medication from your vet. OTC human pain medications are not recommended. If you did not receive any pain medication to give her, call your vet so they can dispense the proper medication for you to give. Other than that, keep her as calm and quiet as possible. Don't bother her too much. Just let her sleep. Keep her away from any other pets until she is fully healed from surgery (about 10-14 days).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Daisy! Is Daisy on pain medications. She sounds painful to me. I would call and ask for pain medications or for additional pain medications. She should be on an anti-inflammatory (rimadyl, previcox and deramax) at a minimum. They can add tramadol and/or gabapentin. If you are worried and are not happy with how she is acting then definitely take her somewhere to be evaluated.
