My puppy has a sore, weeping lump on her leg. Is it a hot spot?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mollie! From your picture the area looks flat but moist with yellow discharge. I think it may be a hot spot which is a superficial skin infection. I recommend using an E-collar if licking, shave the fur and clean the area daily. When I treat them, I prescribe oral antibiotics, steroids and a topical spray. Along with shaving the area and using an E-collar they heal within 5-7 days. If it is more raised and mass like in person I would have your Vet examine the area. I wish you the best!

This could have happened from moisture becoming trapped on the fur, allergies, a wound, etc. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Girly so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This needs to have the hair completely clipped from the area, antiseptically cleaned and an oral antibiotic most likely. I hope this helps! Because it is getting worse quickly, make an appointment tomorrow to get your Vet to look at ti. They will likely prescribe antibiotics, something for the itch, and maybe a topical. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ninja! I can not see the skin well in the pictures due to all the hair. I am not seeing an open wound but more of a sore. If the area is flat, red, moist and weeping it is likely a hot spot. Hot spots are superficial skin infections that occur secondary to allergies, scratching and excessively moist fur (like after a bath or swimming). They crop up very quickly and get larger just as quick. I treat hot spots by shaving all the fur away, having owners use an E-collar or T-shirt to prevent further scratching and I prescribe a course of oral antibiotics and tapering course of steroids along with a topical spray. Most hot spots with this treatment heal with in 5 days. I would make an appointment with your Vet. I wish you the best!

This could also be a skin infection. I would recommend using a product called Sentry Wound Ointment from PetCo and apply to the area until resolved. If there is no improvement or the skin condition worsens I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hello. From the photo that you provided, this looks like a growth that may be benign or malignant. It may also be a cyst. Your veterinarian can try to do a fine needle aspirate on the lump in order to determine if it is urgent to surgically remove it. As to whether the hot spot caused it…. that is not likely. Your pet may be licking or chewing at it and it may have had some part in causing the hotspot, but I cannot say for sure. Your next step should be trying to determine if surgery is needed to remove it. Your veterinarian can help you with that. Thank you.

I am sorry to hear about Lexi. While it is impossible to provide a diagnosis from a photo, it looks like Lexi could be suffering from acute moist pyoderma, also known as a "hot spot".
