Overweight dog has a soft chest lump. Is it a fatty tumor or cancer?

If the bump is under the skin, smooth and you can feel almost all of the way around it you are probably feeling a lipoma or fatty mass. If the bump is hard, irregular, firmly attached to the underlying area, getting bigger, or is painful to the touch then I'm more concerned about it being a tumor and I would bring Sammy in for an exam. Most masses you feel in the skin are benign and as long as you are keeping a close watch on it you should be fine to monitor it at home. It also could be from aninjury or insect bite and it may go away on its on in a week or so. If you are still concerned please take Sammy in for an exam. They can feel the bump and remove cells with a needle and look at them under the microscope. That way they can tell if it's fat, infection, inflammation or a tumor, and they can they recommend the appropriate treatment. We would be happy to answer any specific questions you have about fatty tumors on dogs :) In general, I can tell you that they are quite common in older dogs, and most often occur on the sides, chest, and abdomen. They should feel soft and squishy, and are usually freely moveable under the skin - not attached to the underlying tissue. They are benign, and typically do not cause any clinical problems. If Freddie has some lumps that you think may be fatty tumors, it would be best to have them checked by your vet to make sure. If they are fatty tumors, they would not be expected to cause any problems in most cases.

The lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Leo to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis. I doubt there is a connection between the lump and the vomiting, but this needs to be checked as well.

I work with cancer daily and I do think there is a good chance that it is in fact a benign fatty tumor as older labs get those frequently. However, it could also be something malignant such as a mast cell tumor, sarcoma, among others. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Laya evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. Lipomas can be very common in dogs, and if the lump feels fatty, it may simply be a lipoma. It seems he has a history of non-malignant growths, and due to that, it may be most likely he has another non-malignant growth. Unfortunately only by seeing a vet can you know for sure, and I do recommend having it done. Given that he is acting otherwise normal, there would be no reason why they would put him down and certainly they couldn't do that without your permission. As for an op, they can suggest it if they feel it may help him, but it's your choice as to whether or not the op is performed. I can tell you are very worried about Patch, but don't let that get in the way of having this lump checked out. I'd have him seen by a vet on Monday. I hope this helps!

Unknown lumps and bumps are virtually impossible to diagnose without, at the very least, a visual inspection of the area. As such, I will provide you with some general information. An unknown mass or lump is typically one of the following: a cystic (fluid filled) structure, an abscess (fluid-filled, but infected), a mass / tumor, an allergic reaction / insect bite, or the result of a traumatic injury. A thorough physical exam and inspection of the affected area would be needed in order to determine which is most likely. In many instances, a needle aspirate (small amount of fluid obtained from the lesion and placed on a microscope slide) or tissue biopsy would be required to obtain a definitive diagnosis as to the type of lesion. If this is not an option, one must consider the location, distribution, duration of onset, patient breed / age / sex, and a variety of other factors. As Foxy is a younger dog, it is less likely that she would have a malignant tumor on her body than if she was elderly. You mentioned that the lesion is soft - this is typically a good sign that she is dealing with something benign or harmless. Whether or not this mass has anything to do with the weight loss is very difficult to say. I would recommend you make a regular appointment to see your vet and have her assessed as a whole.
