My dog is sneezing and grunting after spay surgery. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 16 lbs

My dog just got spayed and is now sneezing and grunting. We think she must have a cold or something. Is this something to be concerned about or no? Thanks!

Yes, I would be concerned for Molly. When a pet goes under anesthesia and has a major surgery, it can tax the immune system and leave them vulnerable. Sometimes they can catch kennel cough or another upper respiratory illness. I would recommend taking her back to the veterinarian for a recheck. They can tell you what is going on with Molly and if she needs to be monitored or needs treatment. Thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
