Why does my dog smell like pee even after weekly baths?

Different odors have different causes. A foul odor may indicate a bacterial infection. A yeast infection sometimes smells like Fritos. A fruity smell can indicate ketones created by diabetes. Dental disease also has a strong smell. Anal gland "juice" smells fishy. If you can't figure out where the odor is coming from, I would have Muffin examined by the vet.

The most likely fluid in a spayed female dog would be urine. When a dog dribbles urine or leaves spots of urine on the bedding I often think about urinary tract infections. Older dogs can also develop urinary sphyncter incompetence (or a weak sphyncter), making it difficult for them to hold their bladder overnight. There are also less common causes, for instance bladder stones or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian will likely offer to run a urinalysis, a urine culture, and maybe some bloodwork on Sassy to determine what might be causing the urine leaking. There are antibiotics we use for urinary tract infections and if it appears to be loss of bladder control there are medications to help with that as well. A visit to the vet should help you sort out the cause and hopefully get Sassy acting more like herself. I hope this was helpful!

If the smell comes and goes, then it is most likely from the anal glands. Dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus that release a stinky liquid that commonly smells fishy. If she is scooting or licking excessively, then I would have your veterinarian check her anal glands to make sure that they are not overly full. However if the smell is coming from her urine, then I would be worried that she has a urinary tract infection and would recommend having your veterinarian examine a urine sample. Good luck! Hi there. Dogs don't sweat through their skin, only their paw pads - so if Mollie has a persistent odor, this is likely due to some other problem such as a bacterial or fungal skin infection, impacted anal glands, an ear infection, or some other issue. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to determine what is causing the odor. He/she should be able to prescribe a medicated shampoo or other treatment for the underlying problem, depending on what is found.

Can you isolate where the smell is coming from? If it is coming and going every 2 months, I would wonder if she is having problems with her anal glands. If the smell appears to be coming from her skin, it is possible that it is from the bacteria or yeast on her skin. Poor Asra. It sounds like she has a lot going on. She could be urinating or defecating on herself causing the severe smell. She could also have a wound from not being able to move very well which has necrotic (rotting) flesh which could cause her to smell despite a bath. It sounds like she needs to be seen by a vet to determine where the smell is coming from and if it can be helped. Also, with everything going on, I would talk to them about assess her quality of life. Unfortunately, dogs with DM can decline very slowly and can develop a poor quality of life before they are able to pass away on their own. In those cases, sometimes it is better to humanely euthanize them if they are suffering. I am so sorry that Asra and you are having to go through this. Hang in there.

This sign, if the smell is generalized and coming from the skin, could be caused by skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
