My dog has small pink bites. Are they mites? What should I do?

Mites are diagnosed with a skin scrape from your veterinarian. They are too small to be seen by the naked eye. But signs of mites include hair loss with some itching and some pets, irritation of the skin and secondary bacterial infections. It is common in younger pets so it is a possibility here. The treatment for my it's traditionally is ivermectin injections through your veterinarian. But newer findings have found that the flea preventative's Bravecto and Nexgard are ejust as ffective against mites with fewer side effects and fewer doses needed. These are also prescription products that are only available through your veterinarian.

I would recommend having Misty checked out by the vet. It could be fly bites, but some of the pictures almost look like bruising, which could be caused by bleeding or autoimmune disorders. Your local vet will be most familiar with biting insects and pests to determine if this is a cause.

I would recommend that you have your dogs checked out by a vet. Dog mites (scabies and demodex) are not usually seen with the naked eye, they need to be visualized under a microscope. I think what you may be seeing is inflamed hair follicles and the brown stuff may be flea dirt (or the feces of fleas). If you are truly seeing crawling insects, then this may be a secondary infection, one that is not primarily found on dogs. A vet will be able to examine the skin and take a few samples for microscopic examination so a diagnosis can be made and proper treatment initiated.

Vets diagnose the mites by doing a skin scrape and looking under the microscope. There are 2 types of dog mites: Demodex and Scabies. I treat them with the monthly flea and tick preventatives Nexgard or Simparica or the every 3 month oral Bravecto. I wish you the best!

Poor Dewey! I'm so sorry to hear of his skin troubles. Dewey could be dealing with a number of potential problems. It is difficult to tell from your photo, but it is possible that Dewey is having a reaction to some sort of biting fly or similar. You could try an over the counter topical parasite preventative that targets biting flying insects and see if this helps. The lesions may have become infected, contributing to the scabbed appearance. Patchy hairloss and lesions like this can also indicate a problem called demodex-caused by tiny mites that live in the skin. These tiny bugs can only be treated with certain medications, and can cause ongoing skin problems if not addressed. I would recommend having Dewey checked over by your regular veterinarian-they will perform a thorough physical examination, and may recommend some skin tests such as a skin scrape, which can give better insight into the cause of Deweys problem. Your vet will then prescribe medications as appropriate-he may be prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, medicated shampoo. He could have mites and your vet can do a skin scrape to look for mites. Or your vet could just treat him with Revolution and see if that helps. He might also need an antibiotic to treat a skin infection. You could also bathe him with a medicated shampoo and see if that helps.

Skin issues like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), allergies, an infection, or an underlying medical issue (Cushings disease, diabetes). I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, have any necessary testing done (bloodwork, skin scrape, culture) and start on any treatment that he may need.
