Why is my dog sleeping more and refusing to play or walk lately?

At 3years of age he would generally expected to be more active but every dogs character is different and some are very placid. If his behavior has changed over the last 3 months I strongly recommend a full health check by your vet to rule out medical or painful conditions which may be reducing his mobility

Based on the information provided, I'm not sure how old AJ is, or how long this has been going on, but it looks like she is not spayed. This sort of change in behavior can be due to a variety of things. Arthritis and pain can decrease a dog's activity level, as can problems with the heart or lungs. Any time I have an unspayed female with decreased activity level, pyometra (infection of the uterus) also has to be a concern. A check up with your veterinarian to look for a fever or signs of pain is a good place to start. If they find abnormalities, checking bloodwork to look for signs of infection or organ dysfunction would be the next step. I hope AJ is feeling better soon.

There are many things that can cause them to be stiff and not want to play as much such as but not limited to a hurt back, stiff hips or other joints, and even soft tissue injuries. I would strongly recommend you calling your veterinarian for an exam and possible diagnostics. They will want to do a full orthopedic exam and potentially x-rays. depending on what they find, they will likely send you home with a anti-inflammatory pain medication to make him feel better. I do not recommend giving any human over-the-counter pain medications (aleve, ibuprofen, etc) as these are usually toxic to dogs.

I would definitely get Buddy checked out by a vet. They will likely recommend blood work and urine testing, which will help to differentiate between the above possibilities. Many of these diseases are easily treated through a combination of medication, supplements, and diet changes, and can offer a continued quality of life for many more years. It seems she is hiring somewhere. At her age arthritis can be starting but I would suspect a back injury or a soft tissue strain or sprain. The best thing is actually cage rest. No running or jumping, no playing even if she feels better after a few days. She needs rest for at least 2 weeks. I would advise getting her seen by your vet as they have medicine to help make her more comfortable and can localize he spot that is hurting to help you prevent it again in the future

We can have problems such as arthritis making them feel uncomfortable and not wanting to get up and move around like they used to. We can have systemic illness causing them to just feel lousy and therefore not being as interactive as normal (imagine if you have the flu or a bad cold and just feel tired/like you don't want to do anything).
