My dog's skin tag is bothering her. Is removal worth the risk?

Most skin tags are benign and require nothing more than close monitoring. If they are big enough, there is a risk of getting caught on something. Monitor for rapid change or growth. If the tag causes pain or impedes motion then have it examined by your veterinarian.

Hello. You are correct, this is a skin tag, but a bit bigger than a tag. At this point, you have a pedunculated mass. About 99% of these are totally benign, but we do recommend removal just because they can continue to grow & become traumatized. Removal is curative. Hello! The short answer is yes it is still safe, however you need to be very clear with the groomer; letting them know that your pet has a skin tag and to please be mindful. I would also physically show the groomer where it is located. With that said, I have seen some groomers, despite being told zip right over it. If that does happen it can usually be managed fairly easily by your veterinarian. I think if you just let them know and continue to remind them they will be receptive and heed your instructions. Just point it out to the vet at Skippy's next veterinary appointment. Sometimes these skin tags will change colors but that doesn't necessarily mean it is a problem. That is not something you can do at home as it probably has a good blood supply and will bleed a lot if not surgically removed. This shouldn’t be an emergency procedure so I recommend getting an estimate for the growth removal and saving up to get it done soon. If this has already been determined to be benign then it does not need to be removed unless it is affecting Millie in anyway to improve her quality of life. However, if this has not sampled, a biopsy should be performed. I agree that it is most likely a skin tag but it is not possible to know unless it is sampled. Good luck and have a great day!
