My dog has a skin problem. Is it an infection or contact dermatitis?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures you have provided I suspect what you are seeing is due to a skin infection, either bacterial or fungal. I would recommend that a veterinarian examine the area so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If you are unable to get to your vet right away I would recommend starting the below products which can be found online quite easily or at your local pet store. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the pictures that you provided my primary suspicions would be a skin infection. There are some things that you can do at home if you are unable to get to a vet right away. I would suggest starting with a shampoo that is medicated such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I would also suggest starting welactin omega-3 fish oil and essential 6 Spot On by dermoscent. If there is no improvement then I would see your vet for further testing and treatments. Based on the picture it is difficult to tell if there is irritation on the surface of the skin or pigment changes underneath it. Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. If the area is itchy I recommend you have your pet seen by a vet to help determine the cause. The vet may want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. You can use an e-collar (cone) to help prevent your pet from licking the area, as allowing them to lick could lead to infection. i hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the picture and description, I would suggest having this examined by Mario's veterinarian for further testing and treatment. I would suggest performing a culture on the skin as it does look infected. I would also recommend a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this. It looks as though you are using a plastic cone, which is great! Dogs love scratching at irritated areas. if you are unable to get to the vet right away, I would suggest using a veterinary wound cream such as Zymox topical ointment. I would suggest having a veterinarian examined him so that further tests can be performed in order to determine what the exact cause of these scabs is. Flint may need to be on a course of antibiotics or anti-parasitic medications to treat this. However, treatment would be based on test results and physical examination findings. There's no way to know for sure from a photograph, but it does look like a bacterial infection. It is important to have this seen by your vet to determine what it is so the correct treatment can be started as soon as possible before it gets worse or is a sign of an underlying problem. Your vet will do an exam, possibly labwork, and based on these results will be better able to tell you what is causing this and how best to treat it.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a focal infection though an examination is needed to know. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It may be the picture but I am concerned that there may be also a lump as well. If that is the case, that should be evaluated to know if it is actually a growth. Good luck and have a good night!
