What oral medicine helps a dog with bleeding skin, hair loss, ear infection?

Unfortunately oral medications are probably going to be your best option for trying to manage this condition. Vasculitis can be difficult to treat and will probably not respond to topical therapy very well. Pentoxifylline is a drug that can be used to treat vasculitis by increasing circulation to the area. This is an oral medication however. It is typically well tolerated in most cases that I have used it in. If the immune system is the cause of the skin condition, unfortunately the treatment for that would be to suppress the immune system. You can try topical Tacrolimus to the area to see if this helps reduce the severity. I would discuss these options with your veterinarian to see what the best route to take is. I hope this helps! I'm sorry to hear that your dog is having so much trouble! Fleas can cause a tremendous amount of discomfort, especially if he has an allergy to them. You can get a tablet called Capstar over the counter that will kill any fleas on your dog every effectively within 30-60 minutes, so this would help to give him some immediate relief. It only lasts for 24 hours, so you will need to start him on a longer-lasting medication as well to prevent them from coming back - the most effective products are oral medications like Bravecto or Nexgard, which you can get from your vet. Depending on how severe his skin problems are, he may also need prescription medication such as an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication to treat the bleeding sores - for this, he would need to have a vet exam. I understand that costs are a concern, but this should not be an expensive visit at all - just the exam fee, and you can request written prescriptions for the medication to be filled at a human pharmacy. The medications themselves are very inexpensive.

I would recommend first a good flea and tick prevention. You can use the oral medication or even the seresto collar. Even if she doesn't go outside she can still get fleas. For her skin I would bring her to a veterinarian. She will most likely need medication to stop licking and scratching and antibiotics to heal her infection. She may also be prescribed a shampoo that is medicated that you can't get over the counter. There are great medications now that help with itching also. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think your Vet is referring to Bravecto. Bravecto is an oral flea and tick medication that is given every 3 months. They have found that an extra benefit is that it can fight mange. I am not sure which type of mange your dog has; sarcoptic or demodectic mange. I have heard it is better for demodex. I have used Nexgard a once a month flea and tick medication for demodex. Hope this helps!

This presentation could be due to deep localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria technically called deep pyoderma). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. This sounds like a skin infection and may be secondary to allergies. I would try some beandryl twice a day and a medicated shampoo like miconahex-triz. Since some of them are bleeding, I would strongly recommend to have your vet look at them as well as he likely needs oral antibiotics to help him heal. See link below for benadryl dosing. Oh dear, poor Midnight! Her skin lesions look quite uncomfortable. Excessive biting and scratching may be related to underlying allergies, ringworm, or mange, any of which can then lead to the onset of a bacterial skin infection. As a starting point, make sure that Midnight is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative regularly, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II because a few flea bites could be amplifying the situation. Since she is chewing on herself excessively, also consider using an e-collar (cone) for at least the next few days to prevent further skin damage, as this will only make matters worse.
