My Cocker Spaniel has skin fungus & parasites. Is this treatment plan right?

Hello, sorry to hear about Chintu. It looks like his skin disease has progressed quite a bit. He would likely benefit from a dermatologist to assess him and depending on what has been done, potentially, obtaining skin biopsies would be a next step. One potential cause could include allergies, however other more aggressive lesions like cutaneous lymphoma and fungal diseases should be ruled out. Unfortunately it is difficult to attain a diagnosis based on a picture alone, as this will likely need contributions from diagnostics, physical exam, and history to obtain the most likely diagnosis for Chintu. I would recommend seeing a dermatologist to obtain more specialized care and information. You may ask your veterinarian for a referral to a dermatologist near you. Hope this helps and best of luck.

The e collar is key to preventing licking, so great to hear you are taking such good care of her! New advances are being made in the allergy world for our pups as well. Things like Apoquel and cytopoint (an oral and an injection, respectively) are now available for our pets and have made a WORLD of difference for many of my clients. If you have not discussed this with your veterinarian-it's time! Why're great. For the sore areas-until you can get her in to be seen-you can apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily to deter further bacterial infections, just make sure she cannot lick any of it off. Poor guy. I would highly recommend asking your vet to perform a skin scrape on Tombo. These lesions are suspicious for possible demodexx mites. The trumectin is a Demodexx treatment; however, you didn't mention that your vet actually tested for this. If this is a mite problem, then a topical medicated shampoo can be used in conjunction with the injections to gain better control of the overpopulation of mites on the skin. Also there are several other products that treat for mites that may be more effective for him, such as the off-label use of Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica (have to be 6 months or older, so this may be an option depending on his exact birthdate). Also a skin culture should be done to determine which antibiotic will get rid of this infection for a certainty. Most skin infections will respond to broad spectrum antiobitcs, but there can be resistant infections that don't respond, which may be the case with your pet Tombo. This infection doesn't look particularly fungal in nature; however, if your vet already did a skin impression to confirm there is yeast present on the skin, then definitely continue with the Fluconazole treatment as prescribed. These viable tests (skin culture, skin scrape, impression) should give us a good idea on how we should be treating him from here moving forward. As a general rule of thumb, you can give you pet pet formulated fish oils for just about any skin condition in which the skin is red. Fish oils act as a natural anti-inflammatory and can also held with overall skin health. You can find these at your local pet store or through your vet office. I would also inquire with your vet about prescribing some antihistamines to help with any itching that Tombo has right now. That will help him allow his skin to heal and respond to all the treatments he is receiving. I hope this helps you find some resolve for Tombo's itchy/irritate and balding skin. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection. First of all, you will need to ask the vet to perform a skin scrape (or similar test) - this might reveal an infection. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). I am sorry this may be too late and not much comfort to you at this point. His nose looks very infected and painful. Without a biopsy to know what the disease is, it is hard to treat and keep him comfortable. Drinking more water and eating more may be side effects of a disease or from the steroids if he still takes them. If he feet hurt him and he cannot get around well then letting him go may be best so he does not live in pain. You want him to be happy and comfortable. If the medications are not bring him comfort, and controlling the disease, then you have little options left. I am so sorry.

It is impossible to diagnose a skin condition from photos alone. Her vet may recommend doing cytology, fungal culture and/or skin scrapes to determine the cause of her infection. In some cases referral to a veterinary dermatologist may be recommended for difficult cases. Sometimes there is underlying endocrine disease or allergies that may require bloodwork to diagnose. In the meantime, a diet for sensitive skin is always a good idea for dogs with recurrent skin infection. I really like Purina ProPlan Salmon for dogs with skin problems. Poor girl. It looks like Gowrl has either a fungal or bacterial infection on her skin that can be secondary to either a Demodexx mite problem or skin allergies. I would first have her skin tested for mites. If mites are the cause then her therapy will continue to fail until the mites are treated for first. You should also consider getting her skin cultured to see what antibiotic will completely rid the problem, especially if this is deemded to be a bacterial infection after she has a skin impression done. There is no easy fix for a skin condition this severe. You will have to go through the appropriate process of elimination with the help of your local vet to get her properly diagnosed with a specific skin condition and then treated appropriately. As a general rule of thumb, daily oral pet formulated fish oils are good for generalized skin conditions and can help when used in conjunction with other skin treatments. You can get her started on this right away by visiting your local pet store. No specific brand is needed, since they all are pretty equal in efficacy.
