How long should pet skin bump removal surgery take under anesthesia?

A spay typically does not take longer than 20-30 minutes, but sometimes it can be shorter or longer depending on the dog. For example overweight dogs or dogs in heat can and do take longer. Removing the bump should not take long either, and it could be that whole procedure can be done in an hour to 90 minutes. I would ask your vet for a time estimate. As for the fine needle aspirate (FNA) of her bump, not all types of malignant tumors can be diagnosed with an FNA, so it doesn't mean that her bump is benign if nothing was seen with that test. There are many different types of malignant tumors besides mast cell tumors. While you can see if a bump is a mast cell tumor with an FNA, sometimes it's not always possible so an excision biopsy is needed to get the exact diagnosis. There is a chance the bump could be benign, and your vet is doing the right thing by removed the bump to get a diagnosis on it. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Precious! Usually biopsy samples take 7 business days to come back, sometimes a day or so sooner. Sadly many masses can look the same even benign and cancerous ones. Possibilities are: mast cell tumor, hemangioma and may other things. I think it is a good idea to get the mass removed so you know what it is and whether you have to worry pat the surgery. I wish Precious the best!

If the lum has not gotten bigger and remains stable in size and character, I think it is safe to wait until the 18th for removal. Your veterinarian is likely concerned the mass is cancerous. Therefore she is likely recommending removal for a better diagnosis. It really could be anything, from an infected cancerous mass or an infected benign mass. Removal of the mass and sending it for histopathology would be the gold standard for diagnosis and prognosis.

Your vet should go over instructions for her aftercare based on the surgery. In general we recommend restricting activity untli the sutures are removed, which is normally 7 to 10 days. Unless she has had an upset stomach we can usually give them their normal food, just in small amounts initially to be sure the anesthetic didn't make them nauseous and they aren't going to vomit. As far as how long the surgery will take, that will depend on your vet's office and where the bump being removed is located. You should contact your vet for information on when she will be ready for pick-up from surgery, and at discharge/when she goes home,they should provide you with their specific instructions for aftercare. I wish I could give you some piece of mind. Unfortunately it's impossible to say from a picture if it's benign or not. The fact that it's been there for almost a year now and hasn't become much larger is a good sign, but doesn't make cancer impossible. You are definitely making a good decision to have it removed. I'd recommend talking to Precious' vet about your anxiety and see if she could be scheduled sooner for surgery. Maybe a cancellation will come up. How far away you live from the laboratory could be a reason but usually once it arrives to the laboratory it takes an average of 5-7 days. You can always have your veterinarian expedite it. Hi there, not sure about the previous answer of my colleague, but it sounds like the surgery won't be more complicated than previously thought. The procedure will be slightly more invasive, but other than that will be the same.
