My dog's skin allergies on Temaril: Holistic options for her hunger?

Temaril p is a combination antihistamine and steroid used to help with allergies. Some dogs have environmental allergies that are seasonal and based in exposure. This can be to things such as dust, pollen, grasses...things you can't control. They do make safer immunosuppressive medicine such as Apoquel that helps with this if needed

If Minnie is not showing any symptoms of an allergy (for example itchy skin, ears inflammation, red skin on paws and on the abdomen) but she looks lethargic and unwell, she probably does not need Temaril at the moment. Please, get in touch with your regular vets as soon as they are available to confirm that the tablets should be stopped and to book an appointment for Minnie to make sure she is OK.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! While apoquel is a great drug to stop scratching and to help atopic dermatitis it doesn't do anything in the face of a skin infection. Coco should be checked to see if she now has a yeast and or bacterial skin infection. There is also the option of doing an injection for scratching called cytopoint, which lasts 30-60 days (dog dependent). I would also consider adding Omega 3 fish oils and changing her diet to a non-chicken based novel protein diet (try venison, lamb, fish). Hi there and thanks for posting! Sorry to hear Lolly has been diagnosed with allergies. This can be frustrating for both the pet and pet owner alike! The brown coating on the abdomen may be secondary yeast growth or discharge from a secondary bacterial infection that is present due to itching or scratching at the skin. If the medications do not seem to be helping, you may try having Lolly tested for allergies through an allergy screen. This can help differentiate between a food allergy and an environmental allergy. Food allergies are treated by avoiding the protein source Lolly is allergic to and environmental allergies can be treated with allergy medications such as antihistamines, Apoquel or Cytopoint injections (which work by targeting the inflammatory reaction of the skin), or allergy immunotherapy injections which ultimately produce the best outcome for the patient long term. Temaril is a combination product of a steroid (suppresses the immune system, is an anti-inflammatory), as well as an anti-histamine (counters the histamine affect that is produced by allergies). Another possibility (less likely given the breed/age of Zeek) is a collapsing trachea (weak airway) where the steroid helped with the inflammation. The fact that Zeek responded to this medication, and it has come back when off it, is suggestive that there is either an allergy that is present that requires longer treatment, or small airway disease where the anti-inflammatory effect helped open up the airways. I recommend discussing with your vet if they feel this is seasonal allergies, and if so discusss a medication you can use longer term through the season (discuss Apoquel), as steroids long term can be hard on the body. This medication is very effective to decrease the itch and help with the clinical signs associated with allergies that you describe. The best thing about Apoquel besides its efficacy is that you can stop it at any point so you can consider using it just for the time being while she is affected by allergies the most. Hello, Temaril P is a combination of an antihistamine & prednisone, a steroid. You might talk to your vet about keeping Louie on a small dose, perhaps every other day or so. There are also some eye medications that contain steroids, so the steroid effect stays localized in the eye vs an oral steroid that goes systemic.
