Dog sitting: Infected tumor, owner won't get vet care. What's next?

This looks like a very large tumor that has become necrotic and infected. When a tumor gets this large it starts to outgrow its blood supply and then portions of it die off and becomes necrotic. This tumor needs to be removed because it will not likely heal at this point. I would recommend taking Luigi to the vet as soon as possible to get him scheduled for surgery. Surgery at this age with such a bad infection does have some risks but I believe at this point the benefits of removing the tumor outweigh the risks of anesthesia. Good luck with your little guy.

Your picture came through. Romeo has a major mass that is ulcerated and looks to be infected. He needs to see a vet right away for proper wound management, pain medication and antibiotics. This is a massive mass that cannot be managed at home without the help of your local vet. Once the infection is controlled then it can be discussed whether this mass can be debulked or not. That is a very large tumor that has likely outgrown its blood supply and is opening up. You can’t tell what type of tumor it is without aspirating the cells. At this point, the best option is to remove the tumor but it’s so large that this may be difficult but not impossible. Your poor pup! He could really hurt himself if he keeps trying to chew it off, and the area can become infected. The tumor will likely still keep growing and causing him these issues, so I recommend taking him into a vet today. This tumor needs to be removed so that he stops trying to chew it off. I am very sorry to hear about your dog. Unfortunately at home treatment is definitely not adequate or appropriate for the severity of this lesion. It is difficult to tell without seeing this in person but I would be concerned about a potential tumor. In the meantime, I would put an e-collar on him if he is licking the area and keep him indoors except to use the bathroom because we would be concerned about flies causing maggots in this wound if the dog was outside for extended periods.

I’m sorry you are having issues with Coco. This mass appears to have become wuite large and has started to necrose in the center. This will continue to get bigger and remain infected if it is not surgically removed. The only thing you can do is clean the surface, but that is really not very helpful. Hi there. Unfortunately there are many different kinds of skin tumors/growths that dogs and get and it can be hard to tell what they are just by looking at them. I think it looks like a benign papilloma wart but you must understand that there is no way I can tell you that for sure. It could certainly be a life-threatening cancer. There is just no way to tell from a photo. I don't think it is an emergency but when you can get the funds together I suggest you have that checked out by your local vet especially if it continues to change (size, shape, etc). The growth does look irritated like he either scratched it or is biting at it. If that is the case you need to get him an E-collar (cone) to wear so he stops messing with it. If he continues to traumatize it then it may get infected. If he is not messing with it then I suggest you just leave it alone (no treatment) for now and just watch it. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
