My dog takes Sildenafil. Is Kidney Support Gold safe for kidney disease?

I do not know much about Kidney Support Gold but what I typically use in my renal failure cases is the following: 1. Prescription renal support food such as Hills K/D 2. Azodyl capsules 3. Rehmannia 8 liquid supplement 4. Renal K+ if potassium is low 5. ACE inhibitor such as the Benazecare that you are giving 6. Standard Process Renal Support for dogs 7. Subcutaneous fluids several times per week to help with hydration 8. Hyperbaric chamber therapy My last case of renal failure (also had cancer) lived 20 months past the expected prognosis of 6 months. This dog also was undergoing chemotherapy but I do believe all of the above helped improve his prognosis significantly. I would discuss these options with your veterinarian as well. I wouldn’t have concerns about giving the Vetri-Science supplement along with enalapril and pimobendan, but it would be a good idea to check in with your vet first, particularly to see if a potassium has been checked recently. I am not familiar with the other supplement but do recommend the Vetri-Science. There is some evidence that a restricted protein diet can help with proteinuria so this may be worth discussing with your vet as well.

Hello. Sildenafil does not cause any known stomach issues, so no real precautions are needed, but it never hurts to give a medication with a little food ( unless it specifically says to give on an empty stomach ). Sildenafil has no know precautions like this. Kidney failure definitely can cause nausea & vomiting. I could not find any information on our veterinary information network that would suggest that Selenite in this product is causing any toxicity concerns in pets. There is some research ongoing in farm animals though. I would try Pet Poison Helpline to see if they have any current findings to help put your mind at ease. Their number is (855) 764-7661 However, this is a veterinary product that has been tested and deemed safe for animals, so I would be surprised if there are any negative connotations against it. The dose found in this medication likely is too low to be of toxicity concerns. Also medications don't cause stones, inability to metabolize food properly is the cause for stone formation in dogs. That's a good question. There really aren't any similar "kidney support" supplements that are analogous to the general liver support supplements such as milk thistle. If we have kidney disease present, then there are changes we can make to diet, and fluid supplementation is the most important way to support kidneys. But there's no good preventative supplement. Probably the closest thing would be omega fatty acids such as those in fish oil, which provide general anti-inflammatory benefits for the body.

However, I don't recommend giving supplements such as this without being directed by a vet. The most important way to support Bruno's organ function is with a good high quality food, and good preventative care (disease prevention through vaccination, parasite control, etc). Milk thistle is a great liver support, but the other ingredients have limited data in dogs and, while probably safe, I would not recommend them.
