Why is my dog sick after vaccine and antibiotics? Is it interference?

It is likely that the vaccine has caused some irritation in the nasopharyngeal area. This will likely resolve on its own. It sounds like they had a touch of kennel cough which is like dog flu. What can happen when treating with antibiotics that if the course finishes too soon it can make them better but hasn't completely killed the bugs then it recurs. I would visit your vet as you may need a longer course or different antibiotic.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It sounds as though Pachu is not tolerating the antibiotics. I would contact the veterinarian to discuss other options for treating the skin infection. If the skin infection is not bad, then the use of oral antibiotics may not be needed. I always try to treat mild skin infections with topical therapy alone and get very good success in doing so. If Pachu is dehydrated from the vomiting / diarrhea he may need hydration therapy to help with that. I hope this helps!

It is most definitely bordetella. They can still get the disease even if vaccinated. It is kind of like our flu vaccine - you can still get the disease but usually the course of disease is shorter and the symptoms are more mild. Bordetella can progress into a pneumonia which is why we often treat dogs with antibiotics. If Gracie is still not well she needs to see a vet.

If he is regularly vaccinated you should not be worried about distemper and the signs you noticed are probably due to another cause (possibly upper respiratory tract infection of other source). If the antibiotics are not helping a check up would be needed anyway. Hello and thank you for your post! Speaking from personal experience, this used to happen to my dog as well. I would give him his capsule and sometimes it would get stuck under his lip and it would partially dissolve releasing the powder in his mouth. He would shake his head and foam at the mouth because of how bitter the powder was. He never got sick because of this and the powder generally will not cause any irritation it is just very bitter and distasteful. I would think that the antibiotic itself would be causing him to feel sick if he managed to swallow some of the antibiotic on an empty stomach. It is also possible that it has nothing to do with the medication that was administered and is completely something else that has led to him feeling sick. Since you have an appointment with your veterinarian, I would wait and see what the physical examination shows and possibly have Joel's blood tested. I hope this helps! It would be unlikely that the antibiotics are the cause of her sneezing and breathing issue. She could have allergies, an infection, foreign body in her nose, etc. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may be able to prescribe an anti-histamine to see if that helps. If not, she should be rechecked by your vet to determine the cause and treat.
