My dog is shivering after heartworm injections. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 40 lbs

I have a 3 year old female border collie, she went into local vet today to set booster for parvovirus, distempere, and rabbies. She got texted for heart worms, came back positive. We started her treatment today. She got injections. She isn’t moving around much like I’m told to keep her still and quiet. She is now shivering. Is this a normal side affect?

The injection can be very painful. This could be why she is shivering. If it persists, contact your veterinarian and ask about pain management. If she becomes extremely lethargic or extremely painful, have her rechecked by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.
