Why is my pit bull shedding so much fur in clumps after boarding?

Hello. As long as the shedding is even, not big patches resulting from excessive chewing or scratching, then it is probably normal. My pit seems to shed through July. Fish oil is an excellent idea. Administer daily & do not stop during the winter months & the shedding may be a little less next year. Thanks for contacting Pet/Coach.

I'm sorry to hear Angelica is losing hair. It is not typical for a short haired breed such as a pit bull to blow or shed their coat seasonally. I would be concerned that there is something more going on with her skin, such as parasites (mites or fleas), an infection, or an underlying medical issue. I would recommend she be seen by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her hair loss and start any treatment if necessary. Good luck!

From the pictures you've attached, it looks like either hair coat color changes which can be seen in dogs sometimes or it could be skin color change due to infection. If Leila has been shedding a lot and you're seeing pigment changes to the skin, I would have your vet examine her to see if there is evidence of skin infection that may be causing these symptoms. If the skin is not infected and these are just pigment changes, I would not be concerned about this. The shedding, however, you can use krill oil to help reduce shedding. There are Veterinary products with krill oil in them that can help with reducing shedding. One such product that we use is called Krillex. I hope this helps! My concern with K.D. would be a couple of things. Young pit bulls are prone to developing mange, and it often causes random spots of hair loss just like you're seeing. If he's not itchy, it's likely the demodectic variety of mange, which sometimes will resolve on its own if there's just a spot or two. However, if you're seeing multiple locations of hair loss, it's likely he'll need treatment. Sometimes these guys have secondary bacterial skin infections as well which need antibiotics. Unfortunately these things need to be prescribed by a vet, who can also scrape the skin and verify that this is in fact mange. If it's not mange it could be fleas, or possibly a nutritional deficiency, but I'd consider both of those less likely. Get him checked out so that you can get him on the proper treatment.

If you are noticing actual bald areas on the skin, then this could be a sign of an underlying skin disorder, skin allergies or mange (Demodexx mites). I would recommend a vet appt to have this skin tested (skin scrape/cytology) and treated based on the findings. However if there is just increased shedding with no actual bald skin areas, then I would not be concerned. This could just be a response to the change in weather or seasons. Continue to brush the hair daily and make sure Thor is on a high quality dog food (Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Evo, etc). Also adding in daily pet formulate fish oils from your local pet store can promote a healthy shiny haircoat.

Excess shedding can be from low thyroid levels, hormonal imbalances, allergies or yes environmental. I do recommend a blood panel including thyroid, and if she’s not spayed you may want to get that done to settle down her hormonal swings. That will also prevent uterine infections and lower the risk of mammary cancer too. In addition I recommend a fatty acid skin oral supplement which will help the hairs live longer thus reducing the shedding amount. Shedding fur, even seemingly large amounts, is completely normal for most dogs. If your dog has never shed like this in the past, or if she is losing so much fur she is having bald patches, then I would be concerned. Poor hair growth and cost condition can be due to poor nutrition/diet or an underlying medical condition like hypothyroidism. If you feel like the amount Soska is shedding is abnormal I would recommend a visit to your veterinarian to have her examined and possibly to have blood work performed. In the meantime you can supplement her diet with some fish oil (specifically omega 3 fatty acids) and see if that helps her coat. I hope this helps.
