How to help my dog's itch and stop licking stitches after surgery?

Typically I recommend an anti-histamine like Benadryl or a pet formulate NSAID (such as Rimadyl(Carprofen) or Meloxicam) to help with potential pain at the incision site. It isn't advised to place anything directly on the incision as this can seep through the incision lining and cause infection. I would also recommend keeping an e-collar (cone) on your pet to prevent licking and scratching at the area that can lead to opening of the incision and infection as well. If there are obvious bumps or open lesions on the skin then this should also be treated with an antibiotic (oral) prescribed by your vet.

Hi ! I think the itchiness is related to the wound itself rather than the discharge. Unless there is the beginning of an infection but from your brief description I gather the discharge is minimal and clear which I suspect is secondary to inflammation. I would recommend that you have Vicky evaluated by the vet. If he is so painful that he is becoming aggressive, then it is unlikely that ointment will heal it effectively. He probably needs pain medications and oral antibiotics. He should also have the hair clipped away from the wound to prevent additional infection. If he is scratching the wound, then he may need to wear an e-collar/cone to prevent further damage. If the wound is located in an area where the e-collar will rub, you may have to get a little more creative in how you prevent him from scratching, such as using a soft, donut-style cone or bandaging the feet.

It can take 3 weeks or longer to completely heal from this surgery. The itching is likely due to the sutures and healing. Keep an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing. Your vet may be able to prescribe a remedy for the itching.

If your vet prescribed 28 pills after a surgery then you should give all the pills until gone unless otherwise directed by your vet. If the dog is scratching and licking at the incision then you need to put a cone collar on him and a socks on his back feet to prevent scratching.
