Why is my 13-year-old Jack Russell shaking and yelping in pain?

Pet's info: Dog | Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 15 lbs

I have a 13 year old jack Russell terrier and he is shaking and is in pain. Yelps when he moves and when you try to pick him up. He has had no other health conditions except a corn allergy.

Please get Spike assessed by a vet as soon as possibelt o investigate and treat the source of the pain. Spinal/disk disease, injury and infections such as tooth abscesses would all be frequent causes of extreme pain in older dogs and the sooner treated the best chance of them making a full recovery

This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort.
I would strongly suggest a check up to determine specifically what is causing the signs you described and give appropriate treatment.

The symptoms you are describing occur with back or neck pain. It is best to have Jack seen by a Vet. I treat back pain with strict rest, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. Why is my dog yelping, shivering, and in pain when moving or jumping?

It could be abdominal pain as well as spinal pain. Sometimes spinal disease can have vague symptoms such as shivering or shaking. I would recommend that you have her checked over as there are some medications that will ease the pain immediately but it is essential to distinguish wether the symptoms described are related to a muscular condition,to osteoarthritis or to something more serious like an herniated disc in her spine. This last case is the worst scenario as it can worsen very quickly and determine paralysis. I hope you can have Ebby checked over ASAP and that it is nothing too serious.

I highly recommend that you have Sassy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to investigate what could be the source pain and treat accordingly. Poor Freckles! Shaking can be a sign of pain in dogs, but unfortunately, anorexia and lethargy are very general signs of illness. They can be caused by systemic illness, infection, injury, or inflammation. Given that he is shaking, acting lethargic, and is anorexic, it is best that he sees a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing these symptoms in Freckles, and can treat him for them.

Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. The muscles lining the spine can spasm causing excruciating pain. In more severe cases, a bulging or swollen disc can place pressure on the spinal cord creating neurological problems. Of course, there are other causes of pain. His veterinarian will examine him carefully and direct you on treatment based on these results. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

However, head tremors can also be secondary to underlying metabolic diseases or electrolyte imbalances. They can also progress to full blown seizures. Because of this, I would recommend you get Patch checked out by your veterinarian as soon as possible.

It is common for small breed dogs to have disc disease in the neck or back which is excruciatingly painful.
