Why is my dog shaking, stiff, and yelping when I pick her up?

My dog is acting strange , shaking , stiff , yelped when I picked her up

Poor Alice! Sorry she's having a rough time. Based on your description, it sounds like she is painful; sometimes back or neck pain will cause these symptoms. Please take her to your vet today for an exam. Please do not give any over the counter human pain medications are there are no safe options for you to give at home. Your vet will be able to help identify the most likely cause of the problem after doing a physical exam, and can recommend appropriate treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luna!

It is very common for dogs with neck or back pain to yelp out intermittently when they move. If she isn't jumping up on the furniture like normal or having trouble with the stairs that is common with back pain. With neck pain they don't life their heads much or shake their heads. The not fully shaking makes me even more suspicious that it's her neck or back.

If she continues like this throughout the day I would call your Vet first thing in the morning for an exam to localize her pain.

If there is a pinched nerve in the neck, it will radiate through the whole body and cause discomfort when picking up. I wouldn’t consider it “urgent” but it does sound like she may be in pain and need some medications to help relieve her pain. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Moo. I recommend that she sees an emergency veterinarian today. It doesn't sound like she is feeling well. Small breed dogs can be prone to neck and/or back pain which can be excruciating to them. These dogs will commonly cry when picked up. The veterinarian will examine her and try to determine the source of her pain. She may also need bloodwork and possibly x-rays. From there, treatment can be started. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Poor Lucy! Yelping related to being picked up or otherwise physically handled usually indicates that the dog is painful somewhere. Lucy may have arthritis, back or neck pain, or may have injured herself somehow. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. Your veterinarian knows how to do a thorough orthopedic exam to help determine where she may be painful, and may recommend x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem. It's likely that she would benefit from some type of pain medication (either short or long-term, depending on the problem) which your veterinarian can prescribe for her.

Is my dog in pain? Shaking, stiff back, tucking tail, not moving.

Poor Phoebe! Shaking like this is a common sign of pain in dogs, especially when there is no other obvious reason (such as fear or cold) for her to be doing this. Many dogs who have back pain due to a herniated disc or other problem act very much like this, so this would be my first suspicion based on your description. She could also be uncomfortable due to abdominal pain, or some other injury that is not visible from the outside. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam today if possible - he/she can do x-rays or other testing if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
