My dog is shaking after neuter surgery. Is he in pain? What can I do?

He may still be experiencing some pain and probably does not like the E-collar. You could call your vet and see if he/she could add an additional pain medication or change medications to see if it helps at all. Hopefully, he will be back to normal within a few days.

It sounds like Siete may actually be showing signs of pain if he is shaking. If you are seeing discharge at the incision site it would be a good idea to have a veterinarian check the area out to ensure it isn't infected. The vet can prescribe pain meds or antibiotics if necessary. An Elizabethan collar (e-collar) should be used to prevent licking. Hope he's feeling better soon!

Tramadol can cause some GI upset, however if he is off the meds and still appearing in pain or ill it may indicate something else going on. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if it settles his stomach. However, if he is actively vomiting, or the site of the neuter appears very red or swollen, then having him rechecked by your vet is best to rule out any problems.

What you are describing is pretty normal side effects from the anesthesia. Dogs definitely feel pain after surgery! You should only give pain medication from your vet. OTC human pain medications are not recommended. If you did not receive any pain medication to give her, call your vet so they can dispense the proper medication for you to give. Other than that, keep her as calm and quiet as possible. Don't bother her too much. Just let her sleep. Keep her away from any other pets until she is fully healed from surgery (about 10-14 days).

We don't want poor Achilles to be in any pain, but I recommend you do *not* give him anything tonight, and instead touch base with your primary vet first thing tomorrow morning. Most likely, your vet gave Achilles some injectable pain medications as part of his treatment today, and many injectable pain medications will stay in the system for 12-24 hours. If you were to give anything tonight that was not prescribed by your vet, it could end up being something that might not be safe to have in his system along with the drugs he's already received. The most important thing you can do tonight is to keep him calm and quiet, to keep swelling to a minimum. If he will tolerate it you can also ice the incision line with an ice pack wrapped in a towel, for 10 minutes at a time. If he still seems painful tomorrow, your vet should be able to offer guidance on what would be a safe follow-up to what's already been given. It's been about 10 days since Murphy's surgery, so he should be pretty well healed and not in pain. He may be bored. I hope you have only been giving pain medications prescribed by the vet. If you have been giving him human pain medications, that may be the problem as many of those are toxic to dogs. If you have been giving him human pain medications, take him into a vet now.

I'm glad Pocholo was neutered today and I hope the surgery went well! Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC pain medications for dogs, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would give the public veterinary mission a call or make a visit to see if you can get any pain meds for him. He should be kept as quiet as possible, confined to a small room to keep him from running around. Keeping him quiet is important to make sure his wound heals normally. Check the incision twice daily for signs of infection, which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. If you see any of those signs, Pocholo will need to see a vet for antibiotics. Otherwise, keep the area clean and dry, you do not need to put anything on it. I hope this helps :-)
