My dog has severe separation anxiety. Prozac failed. What can I do?

There are a number of other medications that can be tried for Montana, such as Paxil, Zoloft, Clomicalm, diazepam, and lorazepam among others, but only your vet can decide if one of these drugs are appropriate and safe to use in him. You can try using a DAP which is a pheromone diffuser that can help dogs with anxiety. You can try using a Sentry calming collar, which releases pheromones when it comes in contact with his skin. I would discuss with Montana's vet if any other drugs are appropriate for use in him.

I am sorry to hear about Max. Lexapro is not a drug we normally use in dogs so its safety and efficacy hasn't been evaluated and I would not recommend giving this drug. The drug also requires several weeks of use before effects are truly seen so it would not help you now. Hello. I would start with an over the counter anxiety product like Zylkene. I would also start using a dog appeasing pheromone in the home ( room diffuser ) or it comes as a collar. The pheromone can calm an anxious dog without drugs. Adaptil is the name of this product. If this does not help over the course of a couple of weeks, you will need to talk to your vet about possible behavior modification therapy & the use of prescription medications like Trazodone. Poor Aegon! It sounds like you have tried some good options already. In my experience, the vast majority of dogs with separation anxiety really need prescription medication in order to have success in treating this problem. I would definitely recommend discussing this with your veterinarian to see if he/she thinks that Aegon would be a good candidate for medication. Sorry to hear that Bo is having this issue. Thank you for rescuing him :) Separation anxiety is a huge issue in dogs and it is not an easy fix even with medications. We cannot recommend you give any medications without you talking to your vet first, especially a drug like alprazolam that is a controlled substance. What I can tell you though is that 0.25mg will not touch a dog that size. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than humans as they metabolize the drug differently. What you really need to do is try to correct the behavior instead of trying to mask it. I suggest you consult a dog trainer in your area that will come to your home and assess the situation. They can help you try and correct the behavior. Sometimes medications are indicated to be used in conjunction with training and then you can try to wean them off the drugs eventually. You will need to work with your vet and trainer about using medications in conjunction with behavioral modification. Don't make a big fuss when you return, either--oftentimes owners are unknowingly making things worse by announcing their departures and arrivals. I've had success with anti-anxiety medication like Lorazepam that your veterinarian can prescribe (off-label) for short-term anxiety management. Thundershirt In combination with this, I typically recommend providing plenty of toys such as a kong toy filled with peanut butter and some other noise making toys. I have recently recommended a product called the Pet Cube. This allows you to watch him via an app on your phone remotely and you can even control a laser pointer and interact with him while you are away. If this does not work or the behavior worsens, I typically recommend adding in anti-anxiety medications such as Trazodone, Amitriptyline, Clomipramine (clomicalm), etc. in combination with the above recommendations.
