My dog is in severe pain and can't stand. How can I help him?

The most likely cause for your dog's pain would be arthritis based on her age and the description of the problem you provided. Arthritis is an extremely common condition in dogs. Poor Rex! It sounds like he is quite sore. If he doesn't want to stand, and is whining and crying, then he needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. He'll need to be examined as he may have a fracture in the leg which is why he is in so much pain, or could have damages nerves in the leg. Once the vet has isolated where the pain is coming from then they may want to do X-rays in order to figure out exactly why Rex is so sore.

Oh dear! This is a very serious problem - I'm afraid she really has to see a vet right away. She may have a herniated disc in her back causing the paralysis, or some other neurologic problem affecting her spinal cord. She may be in pain, or she may have no feeling at all in her rear legs - it's impossible to say without an exam. She needs immediate treatment to have a reasonable chance of regaining function in her rear legs, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do at home that will help her. Oh no. Poor guy. A broken pelvis, blood clot, spinal injury or broken leg can cause a pet to not be able to stand properly. These are all very serious conditions unfortunately. I would highly recommend taking Jackson in to your veterinarian right way for a through examination and diagnostic tests to find out the underlying problem for sure. Radiographs would be the first test to run on Jackson and bloodwork analysis would also be indicated to get an overall health assessment. I hope that your pet Jackson is able to make a full and speedy recovery and that the vet can implement treatment right away to address any underlying pain, infection or injury that has occured. Sorry to here that Kemo is having some troubles. There are many things that can cause pain in dogs. Some of them include trauma, degenerative diseases, inflammatory conditions, spinal issues, cancers, clotting disorders, and some others that are less common. In a small breed dog of about six years, my top two differentials would be some sort of traumatic event (that could have happened when you were not around) or an issue with the back. Many times when dogs are lifted and they yelp, it is a spinal problem causing some pretty severe discomfort. If you have ever had back pain yourself, you know just how uncomfortable this can be. Based on the severity and progression of the problems, I would say that Kemo definitely needs a visit to the vet sometime soon. They will be able to perform a thorough physical, and based on the findings, determine if x-rays are warranted. They will be able to target what part of the body requires x-rays. There are many medications available to treat inflammatory conditions and trauma, as well as pain associated with the back and spine. I hope you are able to work through things with your vet to resolve Kemo's pain.

He could have a torn the ligament in his knee, have back pain, or an arthritis flare up causing these symptoms assuming you didn’t see him get injured. I’m glad you’re taking him in soon. They will feel his hips, back and legs and may recommend x-rays. They will most likely put him on pain medication since he's probably not getting up due to discomfort.
