My dog can't stand on his hind legs. What should I do right now?

Oh no. Poor guy. A broken pelvis, blood clot, spinal injury or broken leg can cause a pet to not be able to stand properly. These are all very serious conditions unfortunately. I would highly recommend taking Jackson in to your veterinarian right way for a through examination and diagnostic tests to find out the underlying problem for sure. Radiographs would be the first test to run on Jackson and bloodwork analysis would also be indicated to get an overall health assessment. I hope that your pet Jackson is able to make a full and speedy recovery and that the vet can implement treatment right away to address any underlying pain, infection or injury that has occured. My dog is in severe pain and can't stand. How can I help him?

There can be a number of diseases that cause weakness and/or pain. The first thing that should be done is to figure out whether he is truly in so much pain that he can't stand, or if he has a neurologic problem (i.e., paralysis) that's making it difficult for him to move his legs, or if he has a disease (like something caused by a tick bite) that is making him anemic (low numbers of red blood cells) and making him weak. Your dog needs to be examined by a vet who is capable of differentiating all of these problems, and figuring out what the appropriate therapy is, because the treatment depends on determining exactly what the problem is.

He could have a torn the ligament in his knee, have back pain, or an arthritis flare up causing these symptoms assuming you didn’t see him get injured. I’m glad you’re taking him in soon. They will feel his hips, back and legs and may recommend x-rays. They will most likely put him on pain medication since he's probably not getting up due to discomfort. Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Jerry's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. My dog suddenly can't walk on her hind legs. Is she in pain?

Oh dear! This is a very serious problem - I'm afraid she really has to see a vet right away. She may have a herniated disc in her back causing the paralysis, or some other neurologic problem affecting her spinal cord. She may be in pain, or she may have no feeling at all in her rear legs - it's impossible to say without an exam. She needs immediate treatment to have a reasonable chance of regaining function in her rear legs, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do at home that will help her. If costs are a concern, you can see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help.
