What to do when my dog has separation anxiety and won't eat?

Separation anxiety can be difficult to address but with patience and persistence training can help. Rather than starting on anti-anxiety medications right away, I typically recommend trying products such as NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin and an Adaptil collar, which can both be found online or at your local pet store quite easily. I would also recommend using a Thundershirt, which can be found online or at the pet store. It would also help if you began feeding Sienna breakfast and dinner in the kennel so that she becomes used to being inside the cage for positive things. I would move all of her toys to the inside of the kennel and whenever she goes inside the kennel, reward her with her favorite treat. If this does not help, I would recommend speaking with her veterinarian and discuss anti-anxiety medications as these may be beneficial in deterring this separation anxiety she suffers from. If you keep him in a crate while you are gone this will keep him safe from hurting himself or damaging other things in the house. I would also recommend taking him on a fast-paced walk for 20 to 30 minutes before you leave the house. This will help drain some of his nervous energy. It would also help to give him a toy or a treat to play with and keep him busy while he's in the crate. I would recommend feeding her dinner in her crate and making this a place where she wants to go and is comfortable for her. I would make sure she has plenty of room to move around in as well. It can take some time for a dog to become crate trained but the key is to make it an enjoyable place that she wants to be in. Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for separation anxiety. It is a very complex problem and takes many months of working with a professional in-home dog trainer (plus or minus behavior modification medications from your vet) to correct this behavior. I strongly recommend you get a professional trainer to your home to check out her behavior and then they can help you make changes to help her get over the anxiety. This doesn't necessarily sound like a separation anxiety to me. Some dogs (and cats) are just what I call "sociable eaters"; they don't like to be alone when they are consuming their meals. Some even want to be pet or talked to when they are eating. As long as she is eating her entirely meal in one sitting, I would say that your best solution to the problem is simply to continue sitting with her for the duration of her meals. As far as barking when she's left alone, I might recommend crate training her if she isn't already. Giving her a place to call her own that is like a den might make her more comfortable in situations that may ordinarily be uncomfortable. There are many training videos and books on crate training that will get you started on how to do it and what you will need. In more serious cases, there are medications that can be utilized to address these types of problems, but are not typically recommended until other options have been exhausted. There are some natural options such as the Adaptil collar that I have seen some dogs with similar problems succeed with. Crate training can take a few weeks but once he is used to the crate he will begin to feel safe there. I would also recommend taking him on a fast paced walk before you have to crate him to help drain some of his nervous energy. You can also try giving him a chew toy like a kong in the crate to keep him distracted. Sid is still very young and this is a normal part of puppyhood.
