New home, alone dog: How to ease separation anxiety after moving?

They're adorable! Leaving them in a smaller room with music on or a TV will help. Start leaving them for short times before you go back to work to get them used to being alone. Ignore them some of the time when you are home and don't make a big deal about your coming and going. You may consider having someone come in for a while at lunch to take them out and play with them for a few minutes. If needed there are anti anxiety medications that can be given for a short time to get them to relax when alone. Hopefully they will settle into the new routine. I believe the accidents are associated with the stress from the move. I would suggest trying some of the following techniques; I am very sorry that you are experiencing these issues with your dogs. Move-in can always be both fun and stressful for humans and pets are like. The most important thing for you to do is to make sure that both pets get daily exercise. Even though they don’t spend a lot of time outside, they have always had the option to burn off energy if they need to. Making sure this is done routinely every day and at the same time will help the anxious dog to feel more secure. Dogs are creatures of habit and they do best when they know what to expect. Establish a routine for exercise, feeding and training early and try to stick with it. If your pets have trouble in the beginning, you may ask or hire someone to come over mid day to take them for a walk. If they are going to be crated in the new apartment, go ahead and start getting them used to that now.

It is possible Trish could be feeling a bit anxious, or just wants to be with her new people after all this change! If she is OK to be allowed out in the house when you are home, I would just leave the crate open for her to enter and leave at her leisure and not leave her crated unless you cannot attend to her. If she's still working on housetraining, gating off the house so that she has access only to easy to clean areas such as the kitchen, or keeping her tethered to you with a leash can help prevent accidents while she learns. Most people make the mistake of leaving their dogs for the first time without regard to how long they'll be gone. This can lead to separation anxiety. It is best to begin by leaving for, literally, a second or two. The dog will not have had time to work herself up into a frenzy yet. Come back in and greet her happily. Do this several times; then gradually increase the time you are out in 10 second increments; keep lengthening your time away. If you find her anxious when you come in, go back to the amount of time you were able to remain out without upsetting her. You can also use a Kong toy filled with peanut butter (be sure it's not made with xylitol). For a longer play session, freeze the Kong with the snack in it. She will begin to associate your going out with a goody, which will make it pleasureable.

I would recommend first getting a crate to keep Sid in while you are gone. This will help prevent him from destroying the house and keep him safe so he doesn't get into anything that could harm him. Crate training can take a few weeks but once he is used to the crate he will begin to feel safe there. I would also recommend taking him on a fast paced walk before you have to crate him to help drain some of his nervous energy. You can also try giving him a chew toy like a kong in the crate to keep him distracted. Sid is still very young and this is a normal part of puppyhood. From your description, if Miel is showing this crying behavior when you aren't around, it can be sign of separation anxiety. She is anxious when you leave and is afraid you may not be coming back. This can be a common problem in dogs. I recommend crating her when you are gone. The crate will provide her a small space where she can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train her to get used to a crate. Start putting her in it when you are home and sitting nearby so she doesn't think you are abandoning her, and slowly increase the time she is in it. She can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that she has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to her in the crate. That will keep her occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with his skin. If these methods do not help her, then I recommend having her seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Good luck, I hope this helps!
