My dog had a seizure, can't stand, and vet suspects stroke. What now?

Tia may be dealing with seizures, or another type of neurological disease, or she may have heart condition causing her to have a condition called syncope, which can look similar to what you mentioned. Poor Abby. I definitely sounds like she is struggling. In order to find out what would be causing her signs, she would need to see a veterinary neurologist to perform an MRI of the brain. But I understand she is older and you may be just trying to make her feel more comfortable. If she us having any seizure activity, there is definitely some medications that can help stop those. If she can't stand on her back legs, she may benefit from some steroids and pain meds if after an exam your veterinarian thinks it is an option. If you are wondering if maybe it is "time" for her, you can discuss quality of life with your veterinarian. The important things to think about when considering a pets quality of life include eating, drinking, able to go out to urinate and defecate (rather then just going on themselves), and still enjoying some happiness seeing you when you get home or their favorite toy or treats. I would need to ask a bunch more questions and would be happy to do a consultation if you’d like but let me give you a few ideas. 1) be sure it’s not heart- Fainting spells can look a lot like seizures. Consider a cardiology consult to make sure it’s not that. They’ll do an EKG and ultrasound of the heart to make sure nothing is amiss. 2) weird fungal diseases- I’m from Arizona, land of valley fever - a fungal disease that can - and often does- cause seizures. Other fungi like Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis can do similar things. If Bella has traveled out of Texas- even for just a day or two- these are considerations. 3) Bella is simply an atypical epileptic and needs more/different medication. Just like in people, it can sometimes take some time to find the right combination of drugs to get the seizures controlled. 4) weird drug interactions- double check especially about any anti-anxiety or behavior modification medications and pain medications. 5) hypothyroidism, tick fever, other weird stuff. If you’ve done an MRI, you may have already consulted with a neurologist. If not? That would be the next step along with the cardiologist visit. Best of luck to you and Bella!

I am sorry Bella is having this issue. I agree it sounds like seizure or stroke activity. There is nothing you can do to treat either of those at home, unfortunately. She needs to see a vet to get a diagnosis and then prescribed the appropriate treatment or she will not get better. You have stated that you can't afford to fix what may be wrong with her but that may not be the case. You can't just assume it will be expensive and do nothing. If she is having seizure activity medication to treat that is not expensive. Have you tried this clinic? I do know them but they offer "affordable" care. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Trixie it’s hard to be sure what’s going on. It sounds like vestibular disease. This is an inflammation of a nerve that runs near the ear. When this happens the pet has a head tilt, can’t stand or walk well and is dizzy. I would recommend keeping her calm and away from anything dangerous, like stairs, until you can get her to the vet. You don’t need to give her any medications and it’s ok if she doesn’t eat for a couple of days. Keep water close by. Good luck and kisses to Trixie!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Baby Girl is beautiful, I am sorry she is feeling sick. Dogs can have episodes where they suddenly become very dizzy, (head tilt, circling, 'horizontal nystagmus' which is the eyes flicking back and forth). This can be caused by many different things, including strokes, brain tumors, inner ear infections, etc. There is also a condition called "Idiopathic Geriatric Vestibular Disease" which means "we don't know why but old animals get dizzy". One cause of this condition is a stroke. This condition can resolve on it's own with time, and you usually see a drastic improvement over the first 24-48 hours. In the mean-time, we usually provide a drug called "prochlorperazine" which makes them not as nauseous. You can get this, or a version of this drug, from your vet. There is no treatment aside from making them not feel nauseous from the dizziness. Time is the only healer. If the cause is this vestibular disease, your little girl could get better and have a good life otherwise. This condition can re-occur at any time. If she doesn't get significantly better over the next couple days, then the problem is likely more serious and won't resolve. At that point you have to assess if her quality of life is affected. This will be determined if she has other disease processes going on. You will also need to provide nursing care in the mean-time, making sure she doesn't pee and poop on herself, bringing food and water to her. I hope she feels better soon. It sounds like a small stroke, it could be vestibular disease as well, i would recommend taking him for a checkup today, he should be evaluated to make sure his neurological condition is not damaged.
