My dog had a seizure. What to do if she's shaking and glassy-eyed?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 4 months old | 9 lbs

Please help me! My dog is shaking and her eyes are glassy. She just had a seizure and I don’t know what to do. She has been staring off into space. Please help.

Poor Coco! When a dog has a seizure, they can appear "out of it" for a bit afterwards. She should see a vet for this problem, and if she had a prolonged seizure (greater than five minutes), rush her into an ER vet right away. If she seizures again before you can seek vet care:
- Don't put your hands near her mouth
- Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling
- Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt herself by crashing into furniture, etc

It sounds like Rosy could have seizures. She needs to see a vet as soon as possible for this. Seizures could be caused by liver disease, high or low blood sugar, kidney failure, toxins, brain tumors, or trauma to the brain. The vet can use a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis to treat to diagnose what is causing the seizures and can treat her for it. If Rosy seizures again before you can seek vet care:
- Don't put your hands near her mouth
- Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling
- Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt herself by crashing into furniture, etc
- If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately

There are a number of things that can cause a seizure, such as toxin exposure, liver disease, kidney failure, brain trauma, or idiopathic (no known cause). I would have her seen by a vet for this problem. If your dog seizures again before you can seek vet care:
- Don't put your hands near her mouth
- Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling
- Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt herself by crashing into furniture, etc
- If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately

My dog woke up crying, peeing, and lying on her side. Is it a seizure?

The signs you are describing sound like Coco may have had a seizure. She may have been confused afterwards, which is known as the post ictal period, and can consist of her seeming a little "off". Seizures can be caused by epilepsy, brain inflammation or tumors. I recommend keeping a close eye on Coco, and try to film any future episodes to show your vet.
