Can I get dog sedatives without a vet Rx for anesthesia-free dental?

Oral sedatives are generally not safe for pets with heart conditions. However, there are heart friendly pre-anesthetic injectable drugs that the vet can give such as Midazolam and Butorphanol. Also keep in mind that most pets with a heart condition that are also symptomatic (coughing, exercise intolerance) should be evaluated by a cardiologist and cleared for surgical procedures like dentals to ensure they are good candidates and can handle the anesthesia. The main concern here is the anesthesia and not the sedative used beforehand. On the other hand, if she is not symptomatic (no coughing, exercise intolerance), and she currently is not on heart medications, then she is likely a good surgical candidate b/c her risk of having complications with anesthesia are generally low. Over the counter calming agents don't see to work well. A visit to your vet for sedatives is well worth the investment for medications that work well. keep in mind, there are a few options and you may need to try a few before you find the right one. Most vets today will use a "pre-med" (combination of a pain medication and a sedative) which is often a mix of an opioid and a sedative (often hydromorphone and acepromazine, or some mix of this sort), then an "induction agent" which is usually either propofol, alfaxan, ketamine/diazepam, or ketamine/midazolam, and then will use a gaseous inhalent which is pretty much always isoflurane. Any of these drugs are fine, and often the drug that is best is the drug that your vet is most comfortable using. Thiopental is an 'old school drug' which is less favoured compared to these newer drugs, however it can be used completely safely as well. Doing pre-anaesthetic bloodwork will reduce the risks involved by making sure there is no organ dysfunction prior to surgery. I would suggest just asking your vet how the procedure works, and would check about if IV fluids will be used, what monitoring is present, as the monitoring is probably the most important part of a safe anesthetic, more-so than the type of drug that is used. The only safe and effective sedatives for dogs are available from the vet. Unfortunately it's illegal for me to recommend using anything, including OTC drugs, because I can't see Duke in person. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. He's an older dog, and specific drugs may be contraindicated in him due to potential health problems such as heart disease. I'd make an appointment with his vet. Hi there. I'm afraid there is really nothing as effective as a proper dental cleaning under anesthesia. If your dog won't allow you to brush his teeth, then your options are even more limited. You can try providing things for him to chew on, such as bully sticks and natural rawhides, which can help some to keep teeth cleaner. A company called Healthy Mouth makes a water additive that has been shown to help reduce plaque, so you could try this also if you like. Honestly, though, I would strongly consider having the dental cleaning done if this is what your veterinarian has recommended. Anesthesia for routine procedures like this is extremely safe. Severe dental disease, on the other hand, can cause problems with the heart and kidneys as well as significant pain and discomfort that affects your dog's quality of life. The benefits of having his teeth properly taken care of far outweigh the risks.

Unfortunately it sounds like she need some sort of sedation in order for you to clean that wound properly. A veterinarian is needed to administer the sedation and clean the wound for you. There isn't anything safe that's over the counter for you to give your dog to sedate her at home.

Propofol is used to induce anesthesia and then she will breathe gas to keep her under. All of these drugs will lessen her anxiety.
