How to calm my dog to clean her wound if she won't let me touch it?

The area doesn't look too red or swollen. Infection would probably manifest as drainage, swelling, and/or more redness. Try working with her with some kind of treat she loves. Start by petting her and letting her relax, give treats occasionally as long as she remains calm. If she becomes tense, back off until she calms again. Don't start by trying to medicate her, the wound doesn't look like it needs much care to heal right now. As she is calm, try to get her into position to medicate the area, have the medicine nearby so she can see it, but don't use it if she becomes tense. Offer tiny bits of treat as long as she stays quiet. Only move forward as long as she remains calm. Keep these training sessions short, only five or ten minutes at most, and always end on a positive note, even if all she does is 'sit' to get her treat. This will help her looks forward to her training. Also, if she likes to go for walks, play fetch, go for runs, whatever physical activity she enjoys, do that with her. A tired dog is a happy dog and physical activity can do wonders for fear and anxiety in dogs.

I am so sorry to hear that Felicia had this wound on her leg. I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. From the pictures you have provided it looks as though the wound may be deeper than appears, and thus may require a trip to the veterinarian. The wound appears to have been caused by a puncture, such as a bite, or perhaps if Felicia got caught In a Fence. These types of puncture wounds are often deeper and have caused more tissue damage then can be visualised from the surface. I bet would start by examining Felicia, and the wound itself. The wound would be cleaned and disenfected, the vet may need to sedate Felicia to debris even the wound, if necrotic or unhealthy tissue is present. The vet may chose to surgically close the wound with sutures or leave it open to drain and heal wiith scar tissue. The vet may also prescribe pain relief, anti-inflammatory medictaions and antibiotics to treat a possible infection, or prevent one. I would advise the seeing the vet within the next 24 hours. In the meantime you can continue keep Felicia as calm and rested as possible, and do not use any over the counter medications without the direct advice from your vet. Please clean and flush the wounds with warm water to prevent infection. Put pressure on them if they are bleeding. You can use aspirin for pain. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. You may need a cone so she doesn’t lick the wounds. Unfortunately, treatment is antibiotics and cleaning of the wound, so she will need to be handled to do so. If you cannot handle her, and she is a stray, it is best to contact your local animal control or shelter so they can safely catch her, sedate her, and treat her with a long-acting antibiotics and wound care.

It would be very helpful if you could take some photographs of the affected area so that I can better answer your question. In general, large open wounds should be treated with some sort of daily cleaning (namely a dilute betadine or chlorhexidine solution, do not use hydrogen peroxide as it will delay the healing process), and then something such as raw, unpasteurized honey or white sugar. I would really need to see pictures of the wound to advise you on how best to dress it. Covering the open wound will be very important in keeping things clean and free of insect migration. In applying bandage material to a wound, you need to know how much is appropriate, and how much pressure is acceptable. However, if you feel Sissy is in a great deal of pain, there may not be any way for you to safely and effectively treat it at home with at least some pain management, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics to get things moving in the right direction. If you are finding there are fleas on Sissy, you should treat with one of several different over the counter products if getting into a veterinarian is not possible. Hope this makes sense.

Sorry to see that sugar has a lesion on her skin. My recommendations for that would be to get a hair clipper and remove all the hair on and around the affected area. Once this is done I would pain either a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine solution and scrub the area until it is pretty clean. After having done this I would have obtain a triple antibiotic ointment or something with an antibiotic and steroid in it and apply it generously to the area one to two times a day. In addition I would obtain an Elizabethan collar to prevent sugar from performing any sort of self-mutilation which will ultimately delay the healing process. In some cases these lesions can require systemic antibiotics in which case it will not clear up and you will have to take sugar to the veterinarian to be seen. Hope this helps take care.

Oh my. This looks like a pretty serious injury. Your poor fur baby needs to see your local vet to have this wound managed well. The only thing you can do over the counter is to flush the wound with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water and then sterile saline daily. The vet will investigate this area to see if any stitches or staples need to be placed and also get your poor baby on oral antibiotics (ie Clindamycin) and anti-inflammatory medicine (ie Rimadyl). Without proper closure and antibiotics, this wound will likely not heal well.
