My dog's scrotum looks red and irritated. Is it a skin infection?

That red area could be many things from a superficial skin infection to allergies. At home you can wash the lesion daily with soap and rinse well. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Prevent him from licking the lesion by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Make sure he does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. If it is not improved within 7 days or if it gets worse at any point, have him examined. The scrotum appears to be normal to me. Some dogs have a pink scrotum and it is not concerning. I would only be worried if scrotum was ulcerated, oozing, has scabs on it, etc. This does not look inflamed. If they have a specific time where they are red/inflamed you can use a hydrocortisone spray to help with the redness. The only permanent cure for scrotal dermatitis (which he doesn't seem to have, at least according to these photos) is castration with a scrotal ablation.

This may be a skin infection of the scrotum, or an infection of the testicles. This is not uncommon to see in unneutered males, but can be somewhat difficult to treat. Unfortunately, without examining Ace it's not possible to diagnose the specific problem and recommend treatment. It's best if you can take Ace to a vet within the next day or two, so they can have a good look and recommend the best treatment. For now, I recommend cleaning the scrotum with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) twice a day in case the scrotum is infected. Avoid rubbing or squeezing the area, because this can cause more damage than good. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.

If it appeared suddenly after being in a soiled crate, it’s more likely to be dermatitis (an infection /inflammation of the skin) than more severe conditions such as brucellosis or orchitis. If you’re not able to bring him to your vet ASAP, I recommend placing an e-collar to prevent licking and cleaning the area with chlorhexidine antibacterial shampoo or wipes (available at pet stores) twice a day for 3 days. If the redness hasn’t subsided by then, definitely schedule an appointment with your vet, as a prescription steroid/antibiotic ointment such a dermavet would likely work faster! Best wishes!

I am very sorry that Joey’s scrotum is red. Without a picture it is difficult to know what the problem may be, but I will offer you some general advice to help make him more comfortable. Apply a cool compress to the area for a few minutes at a time over the next few days Place an e-collar on Joey so he does not bite or chew at the area and cause it to become infected or inflamed Bathing the area with warm water and leaving open to dry out If you notice pain, enlargement of the testicles or scrotum sac, change in colour , especially deepening red, blue or purple, discharge or bleeding I would take Joey to the veterinarian immediately. There could be a torsion or twist in the testicles causing the redness or swelling. This is a very painful condition and a medical emergency. If the redness does not go down in the next few hours I would also advice taking Joey to the vet for an examination. It could be skin infection, skin parasite or an issue with a structure within the testicles or scrotum. The vet will be able to diagnose and make a treatment plan with you. It appears a little irritated either from getting rubbed or smashed against a rough surface. You can apply some cortisone cream to help and if it doesn't get better take him to your vet for something stronger

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Chicken is having this issue. This is what is called scrotal dermatitis - an infection of the skin of the scrotum due to high moisture. You can treat this at home. 1. Make sure his environment is always clean and dry. 2. Get this topical spray hydrogel and apply it to the affected area 2-3 times per day until healed. If he starts to lick the scrotum, the problem will get worse or may not heal. He needs to wear it until the scrotum is back to normal. Be sure to get a cone collar that is long enough to go past the end of his nose or his will still be able to lick.
