Dog has small scrotum lesions. Should I see a vet or treat at home?

While I do not see evidence of a bite in that picture, that is still possible and an examination would be needed to determine that for sure. Because it is small and mild, I think it would be ok to treat at home. You may apply a thin film of triple antibiotic ointment on the affected area twice daily for 5 days. If this does not improve or resolves, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. There is a very good chance that this will improve quickly. However, if you notice any signs of worsening, like severe swelling, have her evaluated. Good luck and have a great day!

Thank you for sending the pictures! From what I can see, it looks like this lesion is only affecting the outermost skin layers, with the underlying tissue layers remaining intact. It's certainly possible that this lesion is from a traumatic injury, like the rubber bullet you'd mentioned, but it's equally possible that this is an infectious condition, like mange or ringworm. Since there is a good bit of skin damage that's bloody, it stands to reason that this type of lesion could become infected rather quickly, particularly if Crimson is licking at it at all. Even though we're now several days past the initial injury, I still recommend taking Crimson to her vet for an in person exam to thoroughly assess this lesion. Your vet may need to do some diagnostic testing to rule out infectious issues. Depending on their exam findings, your vet may need to prescribe oral antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory medications to aid in the healing process. Until your vet visit, be sure to prevent Crimson from licking at this lesion at all by putting an e-collar (cone) on her. I hope that she's on the mend soon!

That lesion could be a few things including an injury- like a scrape or infected puncture wound, or flatten skin mass or something like a resolving boil or ingrown hair. If Odin seems comfortable and the area doesn't appear blister-like, swollen or painful, you can try home care. If it looks like anything I just named, he should go to the veterinarians office between now and Monday. At home there are some things you can do which may help to heal the sore. The first thing you need to do is stop the licking (since this can make it worse). Odin should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Remember that the collar must come out past his nose in order to be effective. Next, wash the area once a day with either plain hand soap (like Dial) or a medicated pet shampoo. This will help to control the number of topical pathogens as well as remove oil and dead skin cells. Rinse the area well and gently towel dry. Lastly, apply a topical antibiotic twice a day. Just a dab will do and rub it in well. Make sure the skin is dry before application. Neosporin is fine to use. Since it's on Odin's foot, he needs to rest and avoid trauma so only short, controlled walks. Also avoid rough surfaces like dry grass which may cause further irritation. If the spot is not much better in 1 week, if it gets worse at any point or if the lesion is not completely healed within 2 weeks, Odin needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Because it is getting worse quickly, make an appointment tomorrow to get your Vet to look at ti. They will likely prescribe antibiotics, something for the itch, and maybe a topical. Good luck!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I actually do think that it looks like a hot spot but honestly, I have never seen one in that location. A hot spot is really just a skin infection so it is certainly possible especially if he was scraped in that general location. I would not be overly concerned about it as it looks superficial. Licking can cause more infection and will delay healing. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Chicken is having this issue. This is what is called scrotal dermatitis - an infection of the skin of the scrotum due to high moisture. You can treat this at home. 1. Make sure his environment is always clean and dry. 2. Get this topical spray hydrogel and apply it to the affected area 2-3 times per day until healed. If he starts to lick the scrotum, the problem will get worse or may not heal. He needs to wear it until the scrotum is back to normal. Be sure to get a cone collar that is long enough to go past the end of his nose or his will still be able to lick. However, it would still be a good idea to have him evaluated by a veterinarian to look at it more closely in case it is deeper than what it looks like. Also, these can be painful and can get infected so your veterinarian could potentially start antibiotics and pain control medications. If superficial, these wounds tend to respond well to therapy and heal relatively quickly. Good luck and have a good night!
