Why is my dog screaming, yelping, and constantly looking at his butt?

Your pup could have impacted anal sacs, intestinal worms, back pain, or hip pain among other causes leading to these symptoms. He does sound very uncomfortable based on your description, and based on that, I would have him seen by an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for them.

Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

Your dog could be looking back at his behind because there is something there causing him pain. Milo could have an anal gland impaction or rupture causing him pain, he could be very constipated, or he could have painful gas. I recommend taking him into the vet in the morning to diagnose why is causing him to act this way, and to receive the correct treatment for it. It could be his anal glands, he could have an infection or an impaction, i would recommend taking him to your vet to get it checked ASAP. if the anal glands are infected he will need a course of antibiotics, if they are impacted they will need to be manually emptied.

Your dog could have hip or back problems that make it painful to posture to defecate and would also make it hurt when her tail is manipulated. It could also be infected or inflamed anal glands. This condition is very painful and makes it difficult to defecate or even move. Without treatment, the gland may rupture, causing a open wound on your pet's rear that will require wound care and antibiotics as well as some pain relief. I recommend getting your pet seen by your vet. They will examine your pet, possibly do some x-rays and labwork and be able to give you a better idea of what is going on and how best to treat it.

It sounds like her anal glands may be bothering her. That is the number one reason for dogs to scoot their butt on the ground. She could also have a pulled muscle in her neck or back. It seems like it is their abdomen because they cry when you pick them up that way but it almost always their neck or back that hurts as it is wrenched when you pick them up. If this is not the case, she could be constipated or even have arthritis in her hips or lower back making it painful to defecate.
